Glastonbury TorGlastonbury has an ancient history as a sacred site in the Pagan and Christian traditions. The Tor and some of the surrounding land was originally an island joined to the mainland by a narrow peninsular. It is said to be the Isle of Avalon, a central feature of the Arthurian legends, and has been treated as a sacred place from the earliest days.

Glastonbury became a centre of pilgrimage in the middle ages and the monks of the Abbey lived a life of prayer complemented by writing, teaching, illuminating manuscripts, caring for the sick and poor and looking after the pilgrims visiting the monastery.
