How to Boost Creativity with a “3 D” Experience

May 24, 2010

Bowood_House_2Writing a book for publication is a real commitment of creative energy over many weeks, months and sometimes years. In order to maintain the flow of inspiration and ideas, nurturing your creative soul on a regular basis should be high on your priority list.

Having a clear idea of what activities and situations inspire you and making sure that you include a good mix of these on a day-to-day basis means that your creative well will never run dry.

In addition to the many ideas you already employ for recharging creatively, one approach for conscious and creative writers to explore is the “3 D” experience.

This is when you choose an uplifting activity or set aside some time with the clear intention of being fully and completely present in the moment with whatever it is you are engaged with.

As a result, the quality of your experience shifts onto a whole new level which opens up your connection to Source. With this degree of awareness, your senses are dramatically sharpened and your direct perception of everything around you is with a “beginner’s mind” free from the everyday mental chatter of past and future, judgements and labels.

The circumstances you choose for your “3 D” experience aren’t as important as the degree of consciousness you bring to the situation. Everyday tasks such as washing the dishes can deliver great results when approached with a mindful attitude. However, you will find that certain details support your “3 D” experience more than others so it makes sense to start with what you enjoy the most.

Here are a few ideas for you to explore your own “3 D” experience:

1. Connect with the natural world: wherever you live, deciding to spend time in nature will bring immense rewards, especially when you are fully present in the moment. Pay attention to the season and select an outing or opportunity to spend a few hours surrounded by trees, flowers, birds and animals.

Here in the UK at this time of year, the bluebells and rhododendrons are in full bloom. A few days ago I spent a deeply recharging time immersed in their spectacular beauty & fragrant aromas in the gardens of a beautiful estate near to where I live (the accompanying photograph was taken there although doesn’t quite do the beauty justice). It truly was a “3 D” experience for me!

2. Watch an uplifting movie: when you have a busy schedule, sometimes taking time off mid-week and going to a movie during the day when you would normally be working is an exciting experience all of its own. This is especially the case when you choose a movie to suit the occasion.

I recently went to watch “Alice in Wonderland” which is actually in 3D! The vivid colours and magical qualities of the film combined with the intention I had set to remain fully present throughout left me feeling deeply recharged creatively. As writers, we don’t have to restrict our creative inspiration to writing-related activities!

3. Schedule time for contemplation, reflection and dreaming: many writers fit their writing in around many other commitments on a daily basis. Understandably when there is space in your schedule and you are working on an article or a chapter for your book, generally speaking you will want to spend that time actually writing.

Much as I encourage all writers to write regularly, it is also one of my core teachings to take time out for contemplation, reflection and dreaming. Most of us need to schedule time in the diary for this to happen over and above the reflective focus which may be part of our everyday life.

When you book some time for a “3D” experience of this kind, ultimately it doesn’t matter where you are or what you do because the presence you bring to such experiences deepens the presence that you already are. This is when you know that “3 D” awareness is simply a stepping stone to infinity and beyond! From there, you return with immense creative riches to share with the world through your writing and all activities relating to your authorship.
