June Inspiration for Conscious & Creative Writers

June 21, 2013

“Ping – the immediate recognition of a truth
suddenly grasped and aptly conveyed –
is a quality writers work hard to achieve…

Language carries both unconscious and conscious meaning.
Writing can’t ping until the two are integrated.
When you hack away at your writing and it refuses to ping,
it means you still have something to learn –
either about your subject, your feelings about your subject,
or, more likely, both.

You must develop the you that ‘just knows’ (your intuition)
and stand unwaveringly by this knowledge.

Good writing happens cyclically, inside then out-side, inside then outside.
When it finally ‘pings,’ we simply bow.”

Gail Sher, One Continuous Mistake

Conscious Writers trust their intuitive impulses totally
and follow their lead towards the “ping”.

To your conscious & creative success!

  1. Couldn’t agree more! It’s the depth, complexity and richness of understanding that unconscious meaning and associations can bring that truly breathe life into our writing. I’d never thought of those reasons for something not “pinging” but I can’t help feeling they’re spot on, especially the bit about being unaware of one’s own true feelings about a subject. Fascinating stuff, thanks for passing it on!

  2. My copy of One Continuos Mistake is years old and
is dog eared from the amount of times I have
re-read, dipped into and borrowed many of her
quotes. Yet I donot remember this quote at all.

It landed on a day when I really needed to hear it.
Books, articles get blocked because we have not quite
    reached that place of ping.

I can tell books that ping. They have an energy
and a resonance that I just know.

This is a wonderful quote and so glad you shared it
    today.

Gail is a writer who pings!
