Conscious Completing for Creative Writers

July 10, 2014

Commitment_TickoverRedCircle_250I’ve just finished writing a big section of my book, and it feels exciting to have reached this point! There is a sense of joy and satisfaction in this kind of completion which echoes wholeness for me in a heart-warming way.

There are many more sections still to write, but I’m happy to have crossed this particular threshold of completion. In fact, I feel even more enthusiastic about continuing my Conscious Writing process now that this section is “in the bag”.

With a big project like writing a book, it’s important to celebrate the minor completions along the way. This helps to keep our momentum going until we reach the major completions such as finishing the first draft of our manuscript or completing our whole submission package ready to send to agents or publishers.

Is it Creative Resistance or a Stepping Stone?

Some people shy away from any kind of completion and begin multiple creative writing projects which all lie half finished in drawers and cupboards. Do you recognize that at all?

Sometimes unfinished work-in-progress acts like a stepping stone to ideas which are seen through to completion, and this is a valid way to develop new possibilities. However, if not finishing projects is a recurring pattern, it usually indicates some form of creative resistance at work.

Completing projects may bring fears and anxieties to the surface because at this point in the creative process it is usually time to share our work with others. Of course that means opinions will be formed and judgements made – favourable or otherwise – so not completing projects neatly avoids this situation.

As Conscious Writers, however, we learn to recognize that these fears and anxieties come from the everyday self.

In order to release this kind of block, we need to immerse ourselves in one or more of the Conscious Writing core practices* to reconnect with our deep self. From here, we are free to recognize, acknowledge, honour, and celebrate minor and major completions on the long road from inspiration to publication – and beyond!

Three Tips for Conscious Completing

  1. Be fully present to each completion and avoid rushing straight on to the next section, task or part of your project.

It’s all too easy to be caught up in the momentum of forward motion with any creative project, especially if you are working to a deadline.

Obviously, you don’t want to be stopping at the end of every paragraph or page, or interrupting your flow when you are cruising effortlessly from one section to the next.

Yet when you finish a mind map of ideas for a new blog post or reach the end of Part One of your book, pause for a moment and consciously acknowledge that you have completed at least one piece of your creative jigsaw.

  2. Focus on what you have accomplished instead of what you haven’t yet done.

Whether you are writing a book, creating a course or building a business, there will always be more for you to do!

As soon as you finish one task, you usually find yourself right at the start of the next one. Creative pursuits of all kinds, by their very nature, usually have infinite potential for expansion.

Yet always feeling that you “haven’t yet done x, y or z” is extremely depleting and will ultimately crush your creative flow.

So shift your perspective to the “glass half full” and focus on what you have done instead. Then you can enjoy your minor completions each and every day.

  3. Pause, celebrate, and acknowledge yourself for having reached the completion in a way that is meaningful to you.

Conscious completing involves savouring the moments of satisfaction which come from any, and all, significant finishing points – even if the pause you take is only brief.

Bring your awareness to the milestones you reach, and acknowledge yourself for having made it to those points, even if they include just getting through a creatively challenging day!

Take some time to do something different: go for a walk, do some yoga, or soak in a relaxing bubble bath, and return refreshed for your next creative stint.

With major completions, make the effort to expand your celebration to match the level of the project you have finished. Have a party to launch your book if that is what feels right for you or share your creative conclusions with friends and family over a special lunch.

We all know that the journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step, then another, and another. Conscious completion will see you through to your journey’s end. Enjoy 🙂
