A Conscious Approach to the Alchemy of Authorship

November 2, 2015

drop-of-water-862316_640Two months on from the publication of my book Conscious Writing: Discover Your True Voice Through Mindfulness and More (Hay House), I’m surfacing from what has been an extremely intense experience.

It’s been exciting, joyful and filled with the sense of purpose and dedication that comes from feeling totally on track with being and doing what I’m here to be and do in this particular Now.

Yet simultaneously it has challenged and stretched me beyond my comfort zone as I’ve expanded into new areas that are unfamiliar like creating and filming videos, presenting at press events, media interviews and more.

Despite my background in publishing, the sheer volume of projects and tasks associated with writing and launching a book that nearly all run concurrently to absolute deadlines took me by surprise. And of course this all happens alongside regular business and personal commitments. ‘Intense’ indeed!

Fortunately my regular yoga and spiritual practice have enabled me to remain largely present to the unfolding dream and still at the centre of the dynamic whirlwind (most of the time!). Now as I step back and review everything from the perspective of having ‘birthed’ this book into the world in the best way I’m able to at this time, I realize just how much alchemy is involved in authorship.

Revealing the Gold

natural-medicine-436578_640There are many different views on the exact interpretation of alchemy and the purpose it serves. Yet the common threads relate to transformation and transmutation, the discovery of the elixir of life and the philosopher’s stone which converts base metals into their ‘noble’ counterparts.

Using alchemy as a metaphor, we can see the process of writing and publishing a book as the legendary philosopher’s stone which burns away the dross to reveal the gold.

What is the ‘gold’ that is being revealed to us as authors?

  • Firstly, it’s the transformation of ourselves as we expand into new levels of conscious and creative being and doing.
  • And secondly, it’s the transmutation of our work which becomes increasingly more refined as we proceed through the publishing process.

Finding the right words, for example, as truthful forms that point directly to the essence of our message and the stories we want to tell is an integral part of the creative writing process. We also need to come up with a succinct and accurate description of what our book is about when we start sharing it with others.

In my recent experience, I discovered that the latter continued to develop throughout the editing and production phase as I paid full attention to the impact my words had with those who were hearing about Conscious Writing for the first time.

wave-326155_640Quite simply, refining the words resulted in greater clarity. The ‘gold’ was revealed for people to gain a faster and more complete understanding of this core teaching for anyone who feels inspired to make a positive difference through discovering and expressing their true voice.

A Conscious Approach

When we choose to approach the alchemy of authorship consciously, we can benefit in a variety of different ways. The most important of all is the ability to navigate the sometimes turbulent waters of each stage of the publishing process without losing the connection to our true self. This is the highest priority for us as Conscious Writers as everything else flows from there.

As a result, we see through the doubts and fears of our everyday self and realize that our primary task is to prioritize being conscious, present and aligned with the deep space of authentic truth within.

With this foundation in place, we’re able to remain on track with our core purpose regardless of the challenges that might otherwise knock us off course. We also set ourselves free to expand and grow alongside the development of our ideas into their final form as a printed book that will truly serve its intended purpose.

Dive In

In addition to the principles and practices I include in the book, and specifically the Conscious Writing Process itself, here’s a straightforward but effective technique to support you to benefit from a conscious approach to the alchemy of your authorship:

  • Before you take any important actions in relation to any part of the writing and publishing process, if you don’t have the time or energy for any other preparation, simply pause and take 3 conscious breaths;
  • Close your eyes, drop your awareness into your body to release identification with your everyday mind and emotions, and breathe in deeply before breathing out and making a ‘haaa’ sound through an open mouth;
  • Imagine with each inhale that you are breathing in the confidence and clarity you need to transform your current ‘base metal’ words and ideas into the refined ‘gold’ of enhanced and effective communication;
  • Imagine with each exhale that you are releasing any blocks or anxieties which might limit the depth of your insights into the best way to move forwards with whatever task is in front of you at the time.

The more conscious you are of the transformative potential that writing a book for publication has, the greater the rewards for you and your readership as the alchemy works it’s magic for the greater good of all concerned.

Q4U: What transformative experiences have you had with your writing? What are your thoughts about using alchemy as a metaphor for authorship? Please take a moment to share your comments below.
