7 Timeless Tips for Conscious Writing Success

January 5, 2015

electricity-505869_640A few years ago I wrote an article on how to create a New Year strategy for success and inject a fresh burst of energy into your plans for writing and publishing your book. We republished it last year and received a positive reaction from writers who found it inspiring and helpful.

This year, while my focus is on completing the writing of my new book ready for delivery to Hay House in February, I’ve decided to share these timeless tips with you one more time.

So if you’re ready to follow through on your impulse to write what you are here to write in 2015, bring these tips to life by taking action within the next seven days. Then keep the momentum going by connecting with other Conscious Writers who are doing the same. Enjoy!

Five Steps to Conscious Writing Freedom

October 6, 2014

ViewFromSteps_normandy-291367_640We all have limiting beliefs to one degree or another relating to our capacity to create, our ability to write or the potential we have as authors – or not as the case may be.

The beliefs we have are not just thoughts in our minds; they usually have powerful emotions attached and are like crystallized energy that becomes locked in the body right down to the cellular level.

Some deeply rooted beliefs require professional help to release, and there are many options available today such as the powerful energy healing technique of Life Alignment.*

However, we can make genuine progress with shifting our belief structure ourselves as long as we approach the task with as much deep self awareness as we are able to bring at the time we decide to take action.

The following Five Step Process is for discovering the beliefs you currently have in relation to creativity and letting go of those which do not serve you.

Allow plenty of time on your own and without interruption so you feel spacious enough for deep exploration and release. Take breaks between the steps if necessary to process your thoughts and feelings – walking in nature is always a good option – and rest when you need to.

This same process can also be applied to other areas of your life, including writing. Simply adapt the questions in Step 1 accordingly.

Doing our “little bit of good” as Conscious Writers in 2014

February 11, 2014

“Do your little bit of good where you are.
It’s those little bits of good put together
that overwhelm the world.”
Desmond Tutu

This time last year, as I sat down to write about how we all have the potential to make a significant contribution as writers, whatever form of writing we choose, these words from Desmond Tutu popped up on my screen. Following the golden thread of synchronicity, once more I am inspired to share them with you.

They aren’t the exact words I would use to express my passionate belief that as artists of life we are all living a Hero’s Journey. When we do so consciously and creatively, we make the greatest possible contribution and receive the greatest possible reward. Yet the essence of Desmond Tutu’s message is pointing in the same direction.

It is the direction of wholeness and alignment, where head and heart team up with words and actions, and connect with something greater than our individual selves to inspire our ideas, insights and stories.

The 5 Core Practices of Highly Successful Conscious Writers

February 13, 2013

The image of an iceberg is a wonderful metaphor for the creative writing process.

The 10% we see above the surface of the water represents the actual words of the blogs, books and other communications we write. It arises out of the 90% that is largely hidden from view yet without which the iceberg would not exist at all.

The same principle applies to our writing. A large proportion of the work we do as writers is invisible to our readers but greatly determines the quality of our work and the contribution it makes to the world.

The following 5 practices may not be obvious as part of the mix from the outside looking in when we read the latest book from our favourite author.

Yet, having spoken with thousands of highly successful Conscious Writers, and from both personal and professional experience of Conscious Writing in action, these practices come up time and again as the foundation for authentic success.

I invite you to dip into one or all of these practices to the extent it feels right for you at this time and see from your own personal experience what contribution they make to your writing, your authorship, and your life.

Conscious & Creative Writers Tip – Time for Time Out!

June 26, 2012

10. Pureflower1418672SmallIn the fast-paced, 24/7 world in which we live, many people feel that real “time out” from the pressures of everyday life is a luxury to be reserved for special occasions only.

We are conditioned to think that we should be as busy and productive as possible in all areas of our lives including work, relationships and even our social lives. For writers, this also extends to our creative output on the page.

Yet, regular periods of “time out” will refresh and recharge you at a deep level and result in a renewed sense of excitement, passion and purpose generally.

So I invite you to stop for a moment and ask yourself a few questions. Do you ever feel:

  • that sitting still is a waste of time when you have so many tasks on your “to do” list?
  • dissatisfied with aspects of your life without really knowing why?
  • exhausted and empty but push on regardless?
  • that you want to write more regularly … and simply to write more!
  • frustrated that your creative dreams are far from being achieved?

If so, you may need to rediscover the joy of stillness and having space in your life on a regular basis. Ironically, by doing less we can often achieve more!

Here are 10 ways you can introduce some of these principles into your everyday life: (more…)

7 Tips for Creating Your New Year Writing Success Strategy

January 9, 2012

2012SparklingGoldThe New Year is a fabulous time to inject a fresh burst of energy into your plans for writing your book for publication.

So here are 7 tips to help you have your best writing year yet:

1. Identify what’s really important to you about your writing. So many people today live in the fast lane. As a result, it is easy to lose sight of what really matters.

With your writing, being consciously connected to what is truly important enables you to give yourself permission to prioritise your writing time. This means that you will get your writing done and feel more creatively satisfied as a result.

So start this year by taking time to re-connect to the source of your inspiration to write. Then write about that in your journal to refer back to in the coming months.

2. Clarify your vision. With that connection in place to keep you grounded, the next step is to sharpen your focus on where you are heading. Being clear about your vision will inspire and motivate you to maintain your progress.

One of the most powerful ways of bringing your vision to life is to create a Vision Board. This involves making a collage of images to represent yourself as an author and what you want to achieve with your writing.

If you have already made one, the turn of the year is a wonderful opportunity to add new images which feel appropriate for this year.

Harnessing the Power of Less – in Writing and in Life

January 24, 2011

Perfect_momentThe western world has long been under the influence of the drive for ‘more’. Whether it is money, success, material possessions, power, control, knowledge – or a combination of all of these – we have all been conditioned to associate ‘more’ with ‘better’.

Writers are not exempt. With some notable exceptions, we have been seduced by our motivation to share ideas, insights and stories. Combining this with our love of words and our passion for communication, we have written more words in order to reach our readers more deeply.

Publishers have also bought into ‘more’ in a big way. More words lead to bigger books which have a higher perceived value. Such books carry higher prices leading (potentially) to bigger profits, more books sold and more market share gained.

Yet in ancient Chinese wisdom, everything eventually turns into its opposite. Ultimately, more will become less whether through force of circumstance or through choice.

So as conscious creators, we benefit from learning how to harness the power of less – in writing and in life.
