Authenticity for Authors

October 12, 2018

A couple of weeks ago I attended a book launch organised by a friend and colleague whose book has just been published.

However it wasn’t billed as a launch at all.

Instead I was invited to a Book Blessing, and everything about the celebration sang a song of authentic choices for how this book would be birthed into the world.

I loved it!

Authenticity at Every Level

The teaching that fills the pages of the book and the voice that shines through are perfumed with a level of authenticity that comes from having the courage to stand firmly in your truth come what may.

The same degree of individual preference is apparent from the professional independent publishing option selected and the approach to marketing that’s already successfully spreading the word far and wide.

Clearly the received wisdom of what “should” be done at each stage of the writing and publishing process has been dissolved into what feels truly authentic at every single level for this particular author.

3 Ways to Benefit from Going the Extra Mile as a Conscious Writer

August 11, 2015

05. Intothelight351791SmallI am delighted to introduce this edited extract from the Introduction to my new book ‘Conscious Writing: Discover Your True Voice Through Mindfulness and More’ due out on 8 September (Hay House). Enjoy!

Conscious Writing involves a great deal more than simply following the impulse to write and capturing brilliant ideas in a well-crafted collection of words.

Yet writers around the globe have been doing just that for a very long time, and many have achieved impressive success in the eyes of the world.

So let’s remind ourselves why it is worth going the extra mile and opening consciously to deep inner truth as part of our creative writing practice.

IACCW Member Event: How to Discover Your Authentic Wild Voice as a Conscious Writer

May 28, 2015

Julia McCutchen interviews Judy Reeves JudyReeves150
on Thursday 4th June

As its name implies, wild voice is untamed and unbounded. It goes deep, like roots. Wild voice is what gives a writer the sentence or phrase that seems to come out of nowhere.

We’ll discuss the concept of “wild voice” and how writers can access that voice to give expression to stories, memories, thoughts, and feelings that are often ignored or set aside and how these might be explored for the wisdom they can offer. We’ll also cover:

  • What we mean when we use the word “authentic” in context with creative writing.
  • How writing from your authentic wild voice is different than following the directives of writing exercises that focus on the craft of writing.
  • How you can access your authentic wild voice
  • The benefits of writing from the authentic wild voice for Conscious Writers

Judy Reeves is a writer, teacher, and writing practice provocateur who has written four books on writing, including the award-winning A Writer’s Book of Days. She has edited several anthologies and chapbooks, including those born out of her Wild Women writing workshops, which she has led since 1997. In addition to leading private writing groups, Judy teaches at University of California San Diego Extension and San Diego Writers, Ink, a nonprofit literary organization she cofounded. Her website is www.judyreeveswriter.com and she blogs at www.livelymuse.com

Four Questions for Conscious Writers to Answer & Share

August 11, 2014

InvitationLast week, two invitations arrived on the same day for me to join Blog Tours which are connecting authors with similar interests and expanding the reach for the greater good of all concerned.

I love the principle of creative collaboration and deeply appreciate the resonance of writers sharing their work and supporting each other – so I’m in!

I decided to share my responses here to the four questions asked for the first Blog Tour of authors who write about intuitive understanding to lift the veil on my current writing and to spread the word about the idea.

My invitation for you is to pick up the Blog Tour thread and take it forwards so as many writers as possible can participate and benefit from the experience.

Here’s how it works. Each writer:

  • Is invited by someone to participate, introduces that person at the start of the post and includes a link to their blog. This invitation from me to you is all you need to get started.
  • Answers four questions about their writing as the main body of the post.
  • Invites another writer to continue the process and introduces them at the end of the post along with a link to their blog.
  • Posts what they have written to their blog and shares it with their audience via social media and more.
  • Asks the next writer to post their answers the following week on an agreed day and to continue the process.
Here we go …

Doing our “little bit of good” as Conscious Writers in 2014

February 11, 2014

“Do your little bit of good where you are.
It’s those little bits of good put together
that overwhelm the world.”
Desmond Tutu

This time last year, as I sat down to write about how we all have the potential to make a significant contribution as writers, whatever form of writing we choose, these words from Desmond Tutu popped up on my screen. Following the golden thread of synchronicity, once more I am inspired to share them with you.

They aren’t the exact words I would use to express my passionate belief that as artists of life we are all living a Hero’s Journey. When we do so consciously and creatively, we make the greatest possible contribution and receive the greatest possible reward. Yet the essence of Desmond Tutu’s message is pointing in the same direction.

It is the direction of wholeness and alignment, where head and heart team up with words and actions, and connect with something greater than our individual selves to inspire our ideas, insights and stories.

What is Conscious Writing?

November 4, 2013

Discovering our authentic voice, writing with lasting impact, and standing out from the crowd are high priorities for most of us who write. But how do we go about achieving these intentions? Conscious Writing is a new approach to deep writing with full awareness which takes us into the core of what we’re really here to write, and in the process, opens the way for us to realise our true potential as authors in the world.

As her 40th birthday approached, Jane decided that the book she had thought about writing for so long could not be put off any longer. It felt like “now or never” and she was determined to see it through to completion. As a professional person who had an interest in personal development, Jane knew all about setting goals and positive thinking. She created a plan and scheduled time in her diary to begin writing.

Three months later, with only a few pages of notes written and nothing concrete achieved, she approached me for help. She was dismayed by the fact that despite her best efforts and a strong intellectual determination to write her book, it just wasn’t happening. The situation was especially frustrating for her as she was a disciplined person who usually found it easy to stick to her plans. Yet, she discovered that sheer willpower didn’t work with writing; the harder she pushed, the less progress she made!
