Conscious Writing Core Practice # 2: Spend Time in Nature

September 9, 2017

One of the most significant aspects of my recent silent retreat was spending time in nature and immersing myself in the mystery and magic of the natural world.

It is part of my everyday life; yet having an extended period of time to enjoy all that nature has to offer always feels like such a gift.

I’ve had many awe-inspiring experiences in nature over the years and still discover new levels of awareness, alignment and connection as a result.

Tropical Shock

Many years ago, my first visit to a tropical jungle was initially quite a shock to my system.

We’d travelled for what felt like forever on Venezuelan roads riddled with gaping holes and ended up on an undulating dirt track cut right through the forest.

Finally we came to the point where the track simply ran out – the proverbial end of the road!

As we walked the final stretch to the remote retreat centre, all of my senses were on supreme alert.

How to Follow the Lead of Creative Unfolding

February 3, 2016

ball-443852_250I love the magic and mystery of the creative process; how the invisible realms give rise to a multitude of visible forms – words, pictures, sounds and more.

These often arrive as delightful surprises which surpass all notions of original plans yet frequently reflect a facet of the essential energy we’re drawn to explore through our chosen means of self-expression.

A conscious approach to creativity leads to a rich spring of inspiration that wells up inside us and flows through the twists and turns of our inner landscape to take shape in the outer world.

Yet clues and pointers relating to our creative journey also come from external triggers which reflect back to our conscious awareness different ways of seeing what may be right in front of us, waiting to be noticed.

February Inspiration for Conscious & Creative Writers

February 25, 2014

Write Spontaneously

“The unconscious is the ocean of the unsayable, of what has been expelled from the land of language, removed as a result of ancient prohibitions.

The unconscious speaks – in dreams, in verbal slips, in sudden associations – with borrowed words, stolen symbols, linguistic contraband, until literature redeems these territories and annexes them to the language of the waking world.”

Italo Calvino
The I Ching for Writers by Sarah Jane Sloane

Conscious Writers learn the language of the unconscious through cultivating awareness,
and allow the words to flow spontaneously onto the page.

To your conscious & creative success!

7 Timeless Tips for Conscious Writing Success

January 13, 2014

A couple of years ago I wrote an article on how to create a New Year strategy for success and inject a fresh burst of energy into your plans for writing and publishing your book.

When I reviewed it in preparation to share something of real value with you to herald the start of 2014, it struck me how the tips are not just related to success at the start of the year.

The timeless nature of the seven suggestions inspired me to share them with you one more time alongside one additional recommendation. That is to take advantage of the fresh wave of energy and enhanced sense of creative possibility which is a factor of the New Year.

So if you’re ready to follow through on your impulse to write what you are here to write in 2014, bring these tips to life by taking action within the next seven days. Then keep the momentum going by connecting with other Conscious Writers who are doing the same. Enjoy!

Sneak Preview from the Preface of My New Book “Conscious Writing”

December 9, 2013

It’s a crystal clear day with luminous blue skies. The warmth from the sun feels nurturing as I gaze softly into the reflection on the surface of the water. The light shimmers as a breeze whispers through the trees and sends ripples to the distant shore of the wildlife pond.

I’m sitting in my favourite place with a pen and notepad on my lap, playing with words, trying them on like clothes to feel which ones resonate at the deepest level.

Finding the right form to describe the essence of my work in everyday language feels like a stretch. What words will shine the clearest light into the vastness towards which they point?

I know the essence intuitively. I dance with the energy of it on a daily basis as I journey through the linear time of the everyday world where it takes on the multitude of forms which are the threads that weave my conscious and creative tapestry.

While the essence remains unchanged, the forms continue to evolve and become ever more accurate echoes of what lies beyond. Now it is time for the next layer to be revealed.

What is Conscious Writing?

November 4, 2013

Discovering our authentic voice, writing with lasting impact, and standing out from the crowd are high priorities for most of us who write. But how do we go about achieving these intentions? Conscious Writing is a new approach to deep writing with full awareness which takes us into the core of what we’re really here to write, and in the process, opens the way for us to realise our true potential as authors in the world.

As her 40th birthday approached, Jane decided that the book she had thought about writing for so long could not be put off any longer. It felt like “now or never” and she was determined to see it through to completion. As a professional person who had an interest in personal development, Jane knew all about setting goals and positive thinking. She created a plan and scheduled time in her diary to begin writing.

Three months later, with only a few pages of notes written and nothing concrete achieved, she approached me for help. She was dismayed by the fact that despite her best efforts and a strong intellectual determination to write her book, it just wasn’t happening. The situation was especially frustrating for her as she was a disciplined person who usually found it easy to stick to her plans. Yet, she discovered that sheer willpower didn’t work with writing; the harder she pushed, the less progress she made!

The 5 Core Practices of Highly Successful Conscious Writers

February 13, 2013

The image of an iceberg is a wonderful metaphor for the creative writing process.

The 10% we see above the surface of the water represents the actual words of the blogs, books and other communications we write. It arises out of the 90% that is largely hidden from view yet without which the iceberg would not exist at all.

The same principle applies to our writing. A large proportion of the work we do as writers is invisible to our readers but greatly determines the quality of our work and the contribution it makes to the world.

The following 5 practices may not be obvious as part of the mix from the outside looking in when we read the latest book from our favourite author.

Yet, having spoken with thousands of highly successful Conscious Writers, and from both personal and professional experience of Conscious Writing in action, these practices come up time and again as the foundation for authentic success.

I invite you to dip into one or all of these practices to the extent it feels right for you at this time and see from your own personal experience what contribution they make to your writing, your authorship, and your life.

Mind Your Mindset for Successful Authorship

November 12, 2012

Head&HeartBeing aware of your mindset and how it either helps or hinders your progress as a writer is fundamental to your success as an author.

Many people understand a mindset to be “a collection of thought processes which are characteristic to an individual or a group” (Roget’s II: The New Thesaurus).

However, there is an important ingredient missing from this definition.

Mindset is not just about your thoughts; it is also about your emotions. What you think is crucial but what you feel is even more significant when it comes to writing a book for publication, and indeed with everything you do in life.

Thought and emotion are an immensely powerful combination which can either work for, or against, what you want to achieve with your writing.

7 Ways for Conscious & Creative Writers to Overcome Resistance

October 24, 2011

TrafficLightsResistance can be said to be anything and everything that stops you from doing your writing and all that you need to do to succeed as an author.

Resistance shows up in numerous different ways and often as the voice of the inner critic.

If you regularly put off the moment to start writing, feel overwhelmed with doubts and hear challenges such as, “Who are you to write a book?” – resistance is at work.

Resistance is the opposite of inspiration and is a natural part of the creative process. If you want to write, you need to learn how to manage your creative anxiety.

Here are 7 ways for conscious & creative writers to overcome resistance:
