Conscious Writing Core Practice # 2: Spend Time in Nature

September 9, 2017

One of the most significant aspects of my recent silent retreat was spending time in nature and immersing myself in the mystery and magic of the natural world.

It is part of my everyday life; yet having an extended period of time to enjoy all that nature has to offer always feels like such a gift.

I’ve had many awe-inspiring experiences in nature over the years and still discover new levels of awareness, alignment and connection as a result.

Tropical Shock

Many years ago, my first visit to a tropical jungle was initially quite a shock to my system.

We’d travelled for what felt like forever on Venezuelan roads riddled with gaping holes and ended up on an undulating dirt track cut right through the forest.

Finally we came to the point where the track simply ran out – the proverbial end of the road!

As we walked the final stretch to the remote retreat centre, all of my senses were on supreme alert.

The Iceberg Approach to Conscious Writing

June 9, 2017

I often use the image of an iceberg to represent the way I teach Conscious Writing.

It’s a powerful illustration because it’s so clear that the 10% you see above the surface of the water simply wouldn’t be there if it weren’t for the 90% underneath.

For Conscious Writers, the visible 10% equates to the words that meet the page.

The hidden 90% includes all of the unseen preparation and preliminary creative work that’s required for the right words to arise for the most authentic and effective communication of your ideas and stories.

Inner Preparation

That’s why I place so much emphasis on inner preparation before starting to write.

Paying attention to “who you are” and “where you’re at” when you sit down to craft the words to share your message with your readers makes all the difference in the world.

No one will see the 90% preparation before the essence of your ideas shows up in the form of words; yet at some level they will feel the distinction of writing that comes from a deeper source.

A Conscious & Creative Woman is Like a River Flowing…

May 22, 2017

Hi Conscious Writers!

As soon as I read the following quote, I knew it would become one of my favourites:

“A woman in harmony with her spirit is like a river flowing. She goes where she will without pretense and arrives at her destination prepared to be herself and only herself.” Maya Angelou

It resonates deeply with me as my journey of creative self-realization has involved moving into true harmony with my spirit and forging my own authentic path (on-going!).

My process has included developing a conscious connection with the Divine Feminine and exploring the multitude of ways that yin energy can be expressed through who I am and what I do as I follow the path to my “destination”.

Pushing the River

There have been many challenges along the way as I was brought up to value the masculine, yang qualities of taking responsibility for making things happen, driving life forwards to achieve external success and generally pushing the river!

Sound familiar?

5 Core Practices for Conscious Writers: # 1 Cultivate Awareness

May 10, 2017

My approach to writing is based on a combination of soul and craft.

Honing the skills of your craft is essential for any creative art; for most conscious creatives it becomes a life-long journey of learning and refining that is challenging and rewarding in equal measure!

When it comes to the craft of writing, there are plenty of books, courses and classes that teach you everything from the basics to advanced techniques for shaping your words to suit any purpose.

The “Conscious” in Conscious Writing

My true calling is to create, write and live consciously in alignment with my soul and to guide others to do the same – that is the “conscious” in Conscious Writing.

Working from the inside out with the emphasis on creating the right conditions for soul and craft to meet on the page requires a mindful approach.

That’s why I use the image of an iceberg to represent all of the unseen preparation that encourages creative mindfulness and leads to vibrant writing (read more about that here).

5 Core Practices

It’s also why I developed the 5 Core Practices which open the way to bring all aspects of yourself into alignment – body, emotions, mind and soul – to draw you fully into the present moment before you write.

Who Are You Before the Writing Begins?

February 16, 2017

All of a sudden, as if from nowhere, an idea or phrase arrives fully formed in my awareness; it’s like receiving a ready-made piece of a creative jigsaw. The complete picture is often revealed at a later date yet I’ve learned to pay attention and capture these fragments straight away.

An example is the question, who are you before the writing begins?

It came to me in the early days of developing my ideas for Conscious Writing and remains one of the key questions for self-enquiry that lead you to discover your authentic voice as a Conscious Writer.

Your Authentic Voice

The usual definitions of what your authentic voice is have always left me feeling short-changed as they seem limited and incomplete, certainly where Conscious Writing is concerned.

Hi Conscious & Creative Writers!

This moment in time marks the start of a whole new era. It’s a significant quantum leap as I step up to a brand new phase in my business and my life.

It feels both exciting and challenging yet I’m truly delighted to share that today I’m launching the Conscious Writing for Creative Living blog and a whole new Julia McCutchen website!

Seventeen years ago a life changing accident led me to move on from my career in publishing and start afresh by forging my own path even though I wasn’t sure what that would be.

Twelve years ago I wrote and published my first book The Writer’s Journey and launched the first Julia McCutchen website to present my teaching and mentoring offerings.

Seven years ago I launched the International Association of Conscious & Creative Writers (IACCW) to provide inspiration, guidance and community for writers to discover and express their authentic voice.

Four years ago I created Conscious Writing as a fresh approach to deep and vibrant writing as well as a path of creative self-realization; Hay House published the book last year.

Today I commit to a new level of sharing the message I feel I’m here to share at this time.

Discovering your authentic voice and unlocking your creativity
transforms your life as you wake up to realize your true nature,
express your deepest calling in the world, and
live consciously and creatively in alignment with your soul.

I’m really looking forward to writing regularly for the blog and connecting with you directly to answer your questions and inspire you to take your next creative steps joyfully and with confidence.

I’ll share my deepest insights and inspirations on Conscious Writing and Creative Living, internal alignment, spiritual awakening and accessing your intuitive inner wisdom to navigate major transitions in your life.

What’s new this month?

October 11, 2016

Julia McCutchenHi Conscious Writers!

Earlier in the year I spent the day with a stylist in preparation for a photo shoot (more on that to come soon!) and discovered that I’m ‘autumn’ when it comes to colours.

I’ve always loved the rich hues of red and gold displayed so majestically in nature during autumn and at the moment we’re gathering baskets full of blackberries and apples from the garden which are truly delicious.

Autumn Fruits

The autumn fruits of my creative flowering this year have taken the form of the first Conscious Writing LIVE Online Course which is now in full flow with participants from six different countries.

I’m absolutely loving the process of creating and teaching it live by video, and the feedback so far is really positive so I anticipate I’ll be offering more of these online courses in the future.

In the meantime, our exploration of Diving In to Your Creative Flow in Week 2 included me sharing the story of my own creative recovery which I wrote about in my book (see p 200).

This has inspired me to share the piece with you too in the hope that it inspires you to reflect on how much time and space you devote to honouring your creative impulse. Read more here.

From Virtual to ‘Real’

However wonderful it is to connect with people from all around the world in virtual space, there’s still nothing quite like the profound impact of meeting in person.

This month, I’m doing two events where I’ll be teaching Conscious Writing live and in person:

  • SAT 15 OCT – an introductory talk and book signing at the Tree of Life Festival. Read more here.
  • SAT 29 OCT – a one day workshop organized by Tree of Life Inspiring Events. Read more here.

I don’t do many live events like this so do come along if you can. It’s always a massive highlight for me to meet people who read my newsletters so it would be wonderful if you’d also come up and say ‘hi’!

Whatever your current priorities this month, I heartily encourage you to make time and space for your creativity and your writing.

Till next month…

PS This “Welcome” note is reproduced from the latest issue of the monthly IACCW Journal. If you’re not receiving our newsletter regularly, register with your name and email address in the Start Here box at the top of this page.

IACCW Member Event: CALM: The Foundation to Creative Freedom for Conscious Writers

October 6, 2016

Julia McCutchen interviews Sandy NewbiggingSandy_Newbigging_250
on 13th October

Being consciously aware is the foundation to writing with true creative freedom. CALM, which stands for Conscious Awareness Life Meditation, is a methodology for being conscious of the aspect of the Self that is Aware.

When we focus too much on what we are usually aware of (our thoughts, emotions, life circumstances) instead of the consciousness within us that is aware, creativity is stifled and stress is inevitable. Awareness on the other hand is a peace-filled presence within that is beyond the beliefs and limitations of the conditioned mind.

Mahatma Gandhi was once quoted as having said ‘I must reduce myself to zero’ and explained that when ‘he was out of the way’ he did his best work. The invitation in this session is to let go of your conditioned mind to rest into your inner Awareness and be willing to remain at zero – empty of your conditioned concepts – so that you can allow the silent voice of source to speak and write through you.

We will explore:

  • The difference between writing with the mind and writing with Self-Awareness
  • The habits that keep us caught up in the limitations of the thinking mind
  • How to engage Self-Awareness using Sandy’s simple GAAWO technique
  • Why still silent calm is the key to doing your best work and enjoying the writing journey
  • Why the willingness to experience ALL of life can give you constant calm, liberated living and make you a better writer.

As Sandy is the author of ten books with three self-published and seven with publishing houses including Piatkus, Findhorn Press and Hay House, he will also offer his insight on what publishing route to take and the pluses and minuses of each option.

Sandy C. Newbigging is the no.1 bestselling author of six books, a meditation teacher and creator of Calmology. Red Magazine recently described him as the ‘guru of modern-day meditation’ and OM Times said he’s ‘one of the most effective holistic practitioners of the decade’.  Sandy is known for sharing ancient wisdom with a modern twist that makes sense and through his online membership website called Calm Clan has made life-changing teachings accessible to anyone. His work has been seen on television in 30+ countries and he’s personally trained practitioners in his methods from 15+ countries. For more information, visit www.sandynewbigging.com

Heal Yourself with Conscious Writing

September 5, 2016

mandala-1302804_640I’ve worked with many writers over the years who feel that writing is an absolute lifeline they can’t do without. Zen Buddhist, teacher and author Gail Sher says that it saved her life. Others feel that it restores their sanity in a crazy and chaotic world.

The therapeutic benefits of writing are well documented and include easing the feelings of emotional trauma, reducing stress, solving problems more effectively and even speeding up physical healing.

Conscious Writing incorporates all of these and guides us into the deepest realms of true healing; healing that restores our innate sense of wholeness.

Whether we realize it or not, we all have what we could call an ‘original wound’ which is the convincing illusion of separation from oneness with all that is.

Healing this primal wound happens naturally when we dissolve everything that gets in the way of us realizing our true nature as an expression of wholeness and transform our lives to become authentic reflections of our soul.

So how does Conscious Writing contribute to this core process of healing and transformation?
