Finding Your Conscious Writing Rhythm – Part 1

June 6, 2018

One of the topics that always comes up in mentoring sessions with people who are making the transition from thinking about writing to taking action is how to find a good writing rhythm.

This is such an important subject that I’ve decided to do a couple of posts covering the key practical aspects to consider.

Let’s start by exploring the question…

WHEN?
As a general rule, putting your writing first works for most people most of the time.

This means that you ideally start the day with some kind of energy and/or meditation practice and then write before anything else.

Even if you only spend 15 or 20 minu tes writing, at least you’ve fulfilled your commitment to your creative impulse before you tackle other tasks.

The Writing Habit

Just 15 minutes a day quickly builds the writing habit you need to establish if you want to take your writing seriously.

However, this approach doesn’t work for everyone. Some writers love the early evening twilight zone or come alive creatively at the end of the day and well into the night.

As long as whatever you choose is sustainable and produces the results you’re aiming for, it’s serving its intended purpose.

5 Ways to Lean In to Creative Uncertainty

March 8, 2018

I’ve been developing my ideas for the new project I’ve recently started working on and have been called once more to face an array of unknowns.

I know this space of creative uncertainty with a familiarity that comes from my commitment to living consciously with creativity at the core of who I am and what I do.

The Depths of Discomfort

However that doesn’t mean I’m able to avoid the depths of discomfort relating to the “not knowing” that’s an integral part of the creative process.

I love the fact that my conscious approach leads me over the edge of what I “know” to discover fresh insights and ideas.

Yet it’s genuinely tough to translate the essence I so often realize intuitively into forms which retain the integrity of the message and can be readily communicated, shared and enjoyed by others.

Who You Become

December 7, 2017

In a recent mentoring session with a new client I’ll call Sarah, I found myself explaining a perspective that’s a core principle of my conscious and creative approach to living and writing.

Who you become is just as important as what you create, write, say and do in the world.

In fact it’s essential because who you are and the state of consciousness you’re in doesn’t just determine the quality of your self-expression, it directly impacts your whole experience of life.

Sabotage

Sarah understood this principle intellectually but was struggling to apply it.

She was so focused on being of service to the people she felt inspired to help that she was driving herself hard to make it all happen “yesterday” and causing herself a great deal of stress in the process.

The irony was that the more she pushed to achieve the results she was striving for, the slower her progress and the more frustration she felt.

Who she was becoming as a result of her approach was not only detrimental to her health but also sabotaging the whole project!

5 Core Practices for Conscious Writers: # 1 Cultivate Awareness

May 10, 2017

My approach to writing is based on a combination of soul and craft.

Honing the skills of your craft is essential for any creative art; for most conscious creatives it becomes a life-long journey of learning and refining that is challenging and rewarding in equal measure!

When it comes to the craft of writing, there are plenty of books, courses and classes that teach you everything from the basics to advanced techniques for shaping your words to suit any purpose.

The “Conscious” in Conscious Writing

My true calling is to create, write and live consciously in alignment with my soul and to guide others to do the same – that is the “conscious” in Conscious Writing.

Working from the inside out with the emphasis on creating the right conditions for soul and craft to meet on the page requires a mindful approach.

That’s why I use the image of an iceberg to represent all of the unseen preparation that encourages creative mindfulness and leads to vibrant writing (read more about that here).

5 Core Practices

It’s also why I developed the 5 Core Practices which open the way to bring all aspects of yourself into alignment – body, emotions, mind and soul – to draw you fully into the present moment before you write.

What’s new this month?

October 11, 2016

Julia McCutchenHi Conscious Writers!

Earlier in the year I spent the day with a stylist in preparation for a photo shoot (more on that to come soon!) and discovered that I’m ‘autumn’ when it comes to colours.

I’ve always loved the rich hues of red and gold displayed so majestically in nature during autumn and at the moment we’re gathering baskets full of blackberries and apples from the garden which are truly delicious.

Autumn Fruits

The autumn fruits of my creative flowering this year have taken the form of the first Conscious Writing LIVE Online Course which is now in full flow with participants from six different countries.

I’m absolutely loving the process of creating and teaching it live by video, and the feedback so far is really positive so I anticipate I’ll be offering more of these online courses in the future.

In the meantime, our exploration of Diving In to Your Creative Flow in Week 2 included me sharing the story of my own creative recovery which I wrote about in my book (see p 200).

This has inspired me to share the piece with you too in the hope that it inspires you to reflect on how much time and space you devote to honouring your creative impulse. Read more here.

From Virtual to ‘Real’

However wonderful it is to connect with people from all around the world in virtual space, there’s still nothing quite like the profound impact of meeting in person.

This month, I’m doing two events where I’ll be teaching Conscious Writing live and in person:

  • SAT 15 OCT – an introductory talk and book signing at the Tree of Life Festival. Read more here.
  • SAT 29 OCT – a one day workshop organized by Tree of Life Inspiring Events. Read more here.

I don’t do many live events like this so do come along if you can. It’s always a massive highlight for me to meet people who read my newsletters so it would be wonderful if you’d also come up and say ‘hi’!

Whatever your current priorities this month, I heartily encourage you to make time and space for your creativity and your writing.

Till next month…

Heal Yourself with Conscious Writing

September 5, 2016

mandala-1302804_640I’ve worked with many writers over the years who feel that writing is an absolute lifeline they can’t do without. Zen Buddhist, teacher and author Gail Sher says that it saved her life. Others feel that it restores their sanity in a crazy and chaotic world.

The therapeutic benefits of writing are well documented and include easing the feelings of emotional trauma, reducing stress, solving problems more effectively and even speeding up physical healing.

Conscious Writing incorporates all of these and guides us into the deepest realms of true healing; healing that restores our innate sense of wholeness.

Whether we realize it or not, we all have what we could call an ‘original wound’ which is the convincing illusion of separation from oneness with all that is.

Healing this primal wound happens naturally when we dissolve everything that gets in the way of us realizing our true nature as an expression of wholeness and transform our lives to become authentic reflections of our soul.

So how does Conscious Writing contribute to this core process of healing and transformation?

Create Space for Conscious Creativity

August 3, 2016

zen-970477_640From the earliest times, sages and mystics have shared an abundance of secrets for waking up to our true nature and becoming fully conscious.

Even the simple yet timeless technique of paying attention to the flow of the breath in and out of our body is a powerful way to still the chatter of our everyday mind and open the way for deeper levels of awareness to arise.

As we increasingly open to there being more to life than meets the eye, we discover a naturally occurring creative impulse that seeks expression in the world.

Making space for a conscious approach to expressing this creative impulse leads us to discover our true calling and make the contribution we’re here to make. Ultimately we reap the full rewards of conscious and creative living as our lives become an authentic reflection of our soul.

What is conscious creativity?

Conscious creativity is a combination of self-realization (conscious) and self-expression (creativity). It’s a holistic way to align ourselves with the creative flow of life and validate the inclination we all have for authentic self-discovery and expression.

Conscious & Creative Mentoring – last place, last chance

March 23, 2016

On this beautifully sunny spring day, I’m reaching out to you with this quick courtesy reminder that the application deadline for the new Mentoring Series is coming up tomorrow, Thursday 24 March – and there’s just one place remaining!

This year, my new offering for the focus of our work together is creative awakening which uses creativity as the basis of deep self-discovery and healing into wholeness.

This holistic approach opens the way for you to express yourself creatively and authentically through both business and personal projects from the level of your true self, and set yourself free to create what you’re truly here to create.

CW_Mentoring_2016_LORES_150Read more here

If your primary focus is writing (of any kind) and authorship, my on-going commitment to conscious writing as my core teaching for discovering and expressing your true voice will be the best choice for you.

Having said that, there is a natural overlap between conscious writing and creative awakening and they both come into the mentoring process overall in one way or another.

Choosing between them boils down to how much emphasis you want to place on writing and this is something we can discuss together to find the perfect fit for you.

The mentoring work I do is always deep, transformative and often described as ‘life changing’:

JennyEngstromBaron_150I first came to see Julia for a 2-hour Breakthrough Coaching session at a time when I was struggling to transition from academic writing to more creative work, and I’ve continued to work with her ever since.

During that time, Julia has been instrumental in helping me find my writer’s voice and discover what I am truly here to write.

Working with Julia has been transformative, and her unique approach to creativity and writing beats any creative writing course I’ve ever attended.

Not only is Julia a highly skilled mentor with expert knowledge of the world of professional writing and publishing; she’s also amazingly intuitive and has a natural talent for helping people connect with their creativity.

I can safely say that working with Julia has transformed my writing as well as my life!

Jenny Engström Baron, blogger, writer and activist www.bornwhole.wordpress.com

question-mark-460864_640So ask yourself:
  • Am I as ready as I’ll ever be to create what I’m here to create, write what I’m here to write and live a life that reflects the fullness of my creative soul?
  • If not now, when?
How to Apply

Send an email to info@iaccw.com with Mentoring Series in the subject line, and include a one or two sentence summary of what…

  • You’re currently working on in terms of ideas and/or writing OR what you would like to develop and/or write;

  • You would like to achieve by the end of the Mentoring Series.

We’ll then arrange a time for a quick chat to discuss the detail and decide whether this is the right form of guidance and support for you at this time. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

The Transformative Value of a Conscious and Creative Reboot

March 8, 2016

fire-1021224_640The last year has been a massive reality check for me with regard to the sheer volume of time, energy and effort that is required to see a book through from manuscript completion to successful publication.

Looking back it feels like the conscious writing process to craft the body of work that became my book was the easy part, although it didn’t always feel like that at the time!

Fortunately, my daily practice of yoga, meditation and more largely enabled me to remain present to what ‘is’ through the roller coaster ride of the publishing process. It was a high priority for me to be connected to inner stillness amidst the array of outer activities, all of which involved absolute deadlines.

Yet as the months passed, the more fatigued I felt, the harder it became to maintain the fullness of my balanced perspective. Finally, the moment came when all the major projects were completed, the launch momentum settled and I was able to stop for more than a brief interlude.

Taking time off to recharge was an extremely welcome immersion in the bliss of stillness, silence, space and the restorative energy of the natural world. I subsequently felt prompted to write a short piece to share my experience and encourage you to remember the importance of what I lovingly call a conscious and creative reboot.

Here it is…
