5 Reasons to Write a Letter You Don’t Send

September 6, 2018

Free writing in a journal has played a significant role on and off for most of my life so I know just how beneficial it is for processing thoughts and feelings, clearing internal space, and more.

My personal experience led me to include Conscious Journaling in my professional work as one of the foundational practices of Conscious Writing.

Yet it wasn’t until relatively recently that I discovered a magnificent array of journal techniques to suit all types of people in all sorts of situations.

Journal Therapy

Kathleen (Kay) Adams is a psychotherapist who specializes in “helping people use personal writing – journals, diaries, poetry, memoirs, and stories – as a pathway to deeper self-understanding.”(*)

She calls this “journal therapy” which she defines as “the purposeful and intentional use of life-based writing to further [desired] outcomes.”(*) It’s an approach she’s been using professionally since 1985.

Her work was originally informed by Dr. James Pennebaker who conducted and published research on the relationship between emotional release writing and improved physiological and psychological functioning.

The Journal Ladder

In 1998, Adams combined a continuum of journal therapy techniques that she’d been using successfully with her patients into one model she called the Journal Ladder.

It presents 14 different journal writing options that range from highly structured to completely open in order to help people organize, pace and contain their writing.

The reality is that free writing doesn’t suit all situations, so the Journal Ladder enables everyone to enjoy the proven therapeutic benefits of journal writing and the boost it gives to creativity.

I love the way that writing serves such a broad spectrum of purposes and feel inspired to share some of these tools with you

5 Ways to Lean In to Creative Uncertainty

March 8, 2018

I’ve been developing my ideas for the new project I’ve recently started working on and have been called once more to face an array of unknowns.

I know this space of creative uncertainty with a familiarity that comes from my commitment to living consciously with creativity at the core of who I am and what I do.

The Depths of Discomfort

However that doesn’t mean I’m able to avoid the depths of discomfort relating to the “not knowing” that’s an integral part of the creative process.

I love the fact that my conscious approach leads me over the edge of what I “know” to discover fresh insights and ideas.

Yet it’s genuinely tough to translate the essence I so often realize intuitively into forms which retain the integrity of the message and can be readily communicated, shared and enjoyed by others.

The Power of Ritual

February 8, 2018

The 1 February was the festival of Imbolc, one of the cornerstones of the Celtic Calendar.

Traditionally, as the store of winter provisions started to run out, Imbolc was a time for performing rituals to harness divine energy and ensure the availability of food to see everyone through till the autumn harvest.

Fires would be lit to celebrate the steadily increasing strength of the sun as well as the powers of Brigid, the Goddess of fire, healing and fertility.

Conscious Actions Performed Mindfully

One of the aspects I love about such time-honoured festivals relates to the power of ritual and the immensely positive impact of conscious actions performed mindfully.

Rituals set things apart from the everyday and have the potential to transform your experience from the mundane to the sacred.

Shift Your State of Consciou sness

Whether they’re short and simple or lengthy and elaborate, rituals bring you into the present moment and trigger a shift in your state of consciousness.

Mindfully focusing your energy on a selected intention benefits you in a multitude of ways including boosts to your creativity, commitment and confidence.

5 Good Things Creative Practice

April 10, 2017

I’ve always had an abundance of ideas about almost everything; far more than I could ever follow through on!

In fact, the more awareness and presence I cultivate the more creative I naturally become so the flow of inspiration continues to increase.

Of course this is wonderful for all of the projects I love creating for my work and personal priorities.

Yet it’s also a double-edged sword.

Managing the Creative Fire

Over the years I’ve had to learn to manage this creative fire and the intense energy that’s an integral part of it.

Yet there have been many occasions in the past where I’ve been left feeling depleted from having followed my enthusiasm for too many possibilities and ended up taking on too much.

Conscious Journaling to Clear Your Mind

March 16, 2017

The benefits of journaling are well-documented; it’s a powerful way to promote physical, emotional and psychological healing, manage stress skilfully and boost your confidence as well as your creativity.

I’ve written a journal on and off for many years and have always felt the benefit of doing so even when I don’t write every day. Sometimes once a week is enough.

Yet when I’m travelling I love this powerful stream of consciousness writing even more than usual. I capture the impact of significant first impressions seen with fresh eyes and express my thoughts and feelings about life, the universe and everything with a refreshing sense of total freedom.

A Key Tool in My Creative Treasury

My recent trip to Costa Rica has reminded me just how wonderful it is to have journaling as one of the key tools in my creative treasury. So I’m inspired to share this prompt with you…

IACCW Member Event: How Mindfulness Breathing Can Boost Your Creativity

February 23, 2017

Julia McCutchen interviews Rose ElliotRoseElliot250
on 2nd March

Like most people, I’d heard of mindfulness, and I’d tried it, too: focusing on what I was doing, accepting it exactly as it is without criticising, commenting, or trying to change it, like experts suggest. I’d tried it while washing up, eating, brushing my teeth – I kept trying it, but it seemed so pointless, and boring, that I gave up.

Then, I Met a Monk, an experience I have described in my book of the same name, and he gently taught me how to be mindful using my breath… and everything changed from then on.

It helped me to find the strength and inner peace to get through the most exhausting and saddest time of my life – the illness and subsequent death of my husband of over 50 years – and it also had the most unexpected benefit of boosting my creativity to such an extent that in spite of the difficulties I was experiencing, I was able to write two books!

During this interview you will learn:

  • The origins of this ancient practice of mindfulness breathing; how I discovered it, and how it has helped me;
  • How to do it – it’s really simple – and ways of practising it and integrating it into your everyday life
  • How mindfulness breathing can help you to feel almost instant strength and peace, any place, any time
  • How through practising it for a few minutes each day you can connect with your own unique creativity, inner strength, and peace
  • How you can gently extend your breathing if you wish into a short period of meditation, with all the proven benefits that this can bring

Rose Elliot was born into a spiritual retreat centre founded by her grandmother, and wrote her first book as a result of cooking for the visitors there. She became celebrated for her vegetarian cookbooks and dubbed ‘the queen of vegetarian cooking’ but she also has a rich spiritual background expressed in her recent acclaimed books I Met a Monk, and Every Breath You Take. Inspired by her life-changing meeting with a Buddhist monk, both books are very human accounts of how she found inner peace and freedom through the simple practical teaching of the monk, and in particular through the mindfulness breathing that he taught her, which she says saw her through the most difficult period of her life – her husband’s sudden-onset dementia and subsequent death – and brought not only peace and strength but the unexpected blessing of increased creativity and joy. Conscious Journaling to Clear Your Mind, Open Your Heart and Unlock Your Creativity

November 8, 2016

journal-431912_640I’ve written a journal on and off for many years and have always felt the benefit of doing so. It complements the ‘project writing’ I do beautifully and periodically I’m reminded of just how much I appreciate having this superb tool in my creative treasury!

Journal writing has supported me in so many ways to navigate the waves of transformation as I release what no longer fits my current reality and make the transition into the next phase of my life and my work.

Right now, I’m inspired to remind you that a conscious and creative approach to journaling, what I call Yin-Style or Conscious Journaling, is an extremely valuable practice that is well worth making a priority in your life. In fact it’s one of the five core practices of Conscious Writing. Here’s why, and how… (more…)
