A Conscious Approach to the 5 Stages of Writing

December 8, 2014

five-elementsOpinions vary regarding the number of stages involved in the process of writing and range from three to a dozen depending on the way the contents of each stage are distributed.

In Conscious Writing we place a great deal of emphasis on the importance of inner preparation before any outer action is taken so it is no surprise to discover that this is the first of five stages we go through as Conscious Writers:

  1. Preparation
  2. Inspiration
  3. First draft
  4. Refine and revise
  5. Edit and complete

These stages do not necessarily follow a neat linear progression. The initial preparation leads to inspiration and first draft writing although during the early phases of inspiration we may dip regularly back into preparation before a single word meets the page.

The first draft will always require refinement and revision yet this may end up being more of a dance to and fro than a clear cut boundary between one and the other. A great deal depends on the nature of the content, the relationship we have with it, and discovering our optimum way of working.

For our purposes here, exploring each stage in the typical order enables us to appreciate the subtlety and detail of the creative framework as well as the potential contribution a conscious approach can make.

Five Steps to Conscious Writing Freedom

October 6, 2014

ViewFromSteps_normandy-291367_640We all have limiting beliefs to one degree or another relating to our capacity to create, our ability to write or the potential we have as authors – or not as the case may be.

The beliefs we have are not just thoughts in our minds; they usually have powerful emotions attached and are like crystallized energy that becomes locked in the body right down to the cellular level.

Some deeply rooted beliefs require professional help to release, and there are many options available today such as the powerful energy healing technique of Life Alignment.*

However, we can make genuine progress with shifting our belief structure ourselves as long as we approach the task with as much deep self awareness as we are able to bring at the time we decide to take action.

The following Five Step Process is for discovering the beliefs you currently have in relation to creativity and letting go of those which do not serve you.

Allow plenty of time on your own and without interruption so you feel spacious enough for deep exploration and release. Take breaks between the steps if necessary to process your thoughts and feelings – walking in nature is always a good option – and rest when you need to.

This same process can also be applied to other areas of your life, including writing. Simply adapt the questions in Step 1 accordingly.

Conscious Completing for Creative Writers

July 10, 2014

Commitment_TickoverRedCircle_250I’ve just finished writing a big section of my book, and it feels exciting to have reached this point! There is a sense of joy and satisfaction in this kind of completion which echoes wholeness for me in a heart-warming way.

There are many more sections still to write, but I’m happy to have crossed this particular threshold of completion. In fact, I feel even more enthusiastic about continuing my Conscious Writing process now that this section is “in the bag”.

With a big project like writing a book, it’s important to celebrate the minor completions along the way. This helps to keep our momentum going until we reach the major completions such as finishing the first draft of our manuscript or completing our whole submission package ready to send to agents or publishers.

Is it Creative Resistance or a Stepping Stone?

Some people shy away from any kind of completion and begin multiple creative writing projects which all lie half finished in drawers and cupboards. Do you recognize that at all?

Sometimes unfinished work-in-progress acts like a stepping stone to ideas which are seen through to completion, and this is a valid way to develop new possibilities. However, if not finishing projects is a recurring pattern, it usually indicates some form of creative resistance at work.

3 Conscious Writing Tips from 3 Days on Retreat

June 10, 2014

Following our hugely successful Conscious Writing retreat recently, I am encouraged to share the following three tips drawn from our experience yet applicable to all Conscious Writers as principles to adapt to every individual situation.

CWRetreat_May2014_7cT1. Immerse yourself in an inspiring mix of holistic activities as a lifestyle choice to support your writing.

We all enjoyed a range of holistic activities drawn from the rhythm of my everyday life during the retreat. In fact, many people commented on this being a strong contributing factor in their decision to attend.

These included the opening ceremony when we took a series of conscious actions to open a sacred and safe creative space within which to work.

We also engaged in practices of energy flow, meditation and conscious movement (walking and yoga) as well as dream incubation and more. All of this was alongside learning new creative tools and techniques, and of course, lots of writing!

As a result, we were proactively and continually creating and re-creating the right internal space out of which our ideas and our writing poured.

This is the foundation of Conscious Writing which opens the way for us to shift beyond the usual identification we have with our everyday self and write from the deep self with an authentic voice.

Your take-away:

  • Schedule time in your diary right now to review the current rhythm of your life.
  • Assess the number of components which actively support your conscious & creative growth and development as a writer.
  • Have the courage to introduce at least one small change this month to work towards a mix that increasingly empowers you to make tangible progress as a Conscious Writer. For example, come up with a few simple conscious actions to do each time you write such as lighting some incense, taking a few deep and energising breaths, and sitting quietly for a few minutes to become centred.

What is Conscious Writing?

November 4, 2013

Discovering our authentic voice, writing with lasting impact, and standing out from the crowd are high priorities for most of us who write. But how do we go about achieving these intentions? Conscious Writing is a new approach to deep writing with full awareness which takes us into the core of what we’re really here to write, and in the process, opens the way for us to realise our true potential as authors in the world.

As her 40th birthday approached, Jane decided that the book she had thought about writing for so long could not be put off any longer. It felt like “now or never” and she was determined to see it through to completion. As a professional person who had an interest in personal development, Jane knew all about setting goals and positive thinking. She created a plan and scheduled time in her diary to begin writing.

Three months later, with only a few pages of notes written and nothing concrete achieved, she approached me for help. She was dismayed by the fact that despite her best efforts and a strong intellectual determination to write her book, it just wasn’t happening. The situation was especially frustrating for her as she was a disciplined person who usually found it easy to stick to her plans. Yet, she discovered that sheer willpower didn’t work with writing; the harder she pushed, the less progress she made!
