Symposium Snippets: Wise Words for Writers – Part 2

May 29, 2012

2012Symposium_logoThe IACCW 2012 Symposium brought together an inspiring mix of bestselling authors and international experts who are each making an important contribution to the world from their particular area of expertise.

As conscious and creative writers, we all have the opportunity to make a positive difference to others through our writing and all that we do as authors.

We can learn a great deal about the best way to do so from others who are already offering their gifts, insights, stories and expertise to an awakening world.

Here are some of the key points from the final three of our Symposium Speakers to support you as an author:

Tim Freke, internationally respected authority on world spirituality and author of many groundbreaking books spoke to us on The Mystery Experience for Conscious & Creative Writers.

  • Fall in love so deeply with each new book idea that the words insist on being written!
  • Imagination is everything, so experiment with ideas like windows through which you can see.
  • Through opening ourselves to the wonder of life, we come to know a “deep awake” state out of which deep writing arises, as if the universe is speaking through us.
  • A new approach to thinking can be described as paralogical. It invites us to embrace paradox such as engaging fully with BOTH the effort AND the flow of creative writing.
  • Have the courage to disregard thousands of words of first draft writing if you realize that the purpose it served was to guide you to one key paragraph that is the true essence of what you want to share. Develop your work from there.

Symposium Snippets: Wise Words for Writers – Part 1

May 15, 2012

2012Symposium_logoThe IACCW 2012 Symposium brought together an inspiring mix of bestselling authors and international experts who are each making an important contribution to the world from their particular area of expertise.

Conscious and creative writers have an important role to play in this year of major change and transformation.

Authors who have already succeeded in expressing their message with authenticity and impact have a great deal of experience to offer writers who are on their way to doing the same.

Here are some of the key points from the first three of our Symposium Speakers to support you as an author:

Lynne McTaggart, award-winning journalist and author of six cutting edge books that have been translated into 28 languages, spoke to us on Understanding the Bond: the Power of Stories to Change our World

  • Stories engage people emotionally so you need to draw the reader towards the key point(s) of your book in an enjoyable way by telling lots of stories interspersed with your central message.
  • “Show don’t tell” applies to non-fiction as well as fiction.
  • Make sure your background research is solid and build a relationship with your reader through stories.
  • Be prepared to live and breathe your topic in order to write authentically.
  • It’s time for a new world story and writers have a key role in telling that new story in their own way. We need to look deeply, demonstrate what “is”, entertain, and inspire people to positive action.

2011 Symposium Feedback

May 9, 2011

IACCW_logo vert_purp, goldSMLAs the rhythm of life settles down following the excitement of the 2011 Symposium, it is heart-warming to know that the words of wisdom from our Speakers have had such a deep impact.

Thank you again to Caroline Myss, Dan Millman, Louise Chunn, Robert Holden and Mike Dooley for their contribution and support of the IACCW.

We have had some amazing feedback. Read a selection of comments below and thank you to everyone who contacted us. We love hearing from you!

We had 1,681 aspiring and published authors around the world register for this virtual event, and we’re already looking forward to next year – especially as it will be 2012. If you have any favourite authors or experts you’d like to hear speak, send an email to info@iaccw.com and let us know.

“I wanted to send a note of personal thanks and deep gratitude to you for providing the amazing opportunity to listen to some of the greatest authors talk intimately about their passion. It may well have changed my life forever and shone the light on an area of my path yet to be fully realised.

These calls stirred something deep inside of me. The information and detail of the calls were so rich and insightful it was as if I had entered a whole new captivating world – the world of a writer.

I am so excited and inspired especially as the big comforting factor loud and clear was that all their experiences related back to everyone – they are not a breed apart they too have a passion to convey their heartfelt message!

A new door has been opened for me Julia, that you shone the light through and for that I am deeply grateful to you and for your generosity of offering the calls to non members.” Cyndy King

Writers Need to Learn From the Best

April 25, 2011

Excellence_Gold_StarsWhen you are new to writing, there is inevitably a great deal to learn as you work your way towards becoming a published author. This learning happens at many different levels and is an important part of the journey.

If you’re committed to your craft, the learning doesn’t stop once you know how to write a first draft or complete a good book proposal. There are always deeper levels of conscious creativity to explore within yourself and more to benefit from knowing about all aspects of authorship.

There is a great deal of information from many different “experts” around these days and making sure you are learning from the best is an important lesson in itself.

So what criteria should you use to judge the quality of the information you discover?

Here are some general guidelines:

1. Only take advice from those getting the results you seek.

The first time you look for an outside opinion on your writing represents an important threshold. Whether you want feedback on your ideas or comments about your writing style, you may feel drawn to ask the people you already know for their views.

Understandable though this may be, I’d like to sound a note of caution. Well-meaning friends, family members and colleagues can, despite the best intentions, lead you astray.

When consulting a professional, make sure that they are measurably successful and genuinely getting the results you are looking for.

IACCW MEMBER EVENT: How To Make Every Day a Writing Day

January 31, 2011

Julia McCutchen interviews Judy Reeves Judy Reeves250

Every writer dreams of “getting away”, of finding a time and place where she can really focus on her writing.

But what if “away” is a state of mind and that secret, hidden retreat is as near as your sofa or kitchen table or the café around the corner? It’s called writing practice and it’s in creating such a practice that the novel or memoir or story will actually get written. Through writing practice, every day becomes a writing day.

In this interview, you’ll learn:

  • How to create a daily writing practice
  • Tips and techniques for finding time and creating space
  • How to get started (and how to keep going)
  • Why and how to use writing prompts
  • What stuck looks like and how to get unstuck
  • How to avoid the critic, the editor and the censor
  • What the 12 essential guidelines for writers are

Judy Reeves is a writer, teacher, and writing practice provocateur who has written four books on writing including A Writer’s Book of Days and Writing Alone, Writing Together. Her work has appeared in magazines, journals, anthologies and in the spoken word compilation First Friday: Year 3. She’s also the editor of the Brown Bag Anthology, and a cofounder of the Writing Center, a nonprofit literary arts organization. In addition to leading writing practice groups, Judy holds private workshops, teaches at University of California San Diego Extension; San Diego Writers, Ink; and writing conferences internationally. She lives in San Diego, CA. Visit her online at www.judyreeveswriter.com.

IACCW Special Announcement

October 5, 2010

Hi Conscious & Creative Writers!

Here in the UK, nature is visibly on the move. The leaves are just beginning to turn from deepest green to rich shades of red and gold. Outside, the squirrels are busy gathering and storing the sustenance they need to see them through the winter months.

Writers can learn a thing or two from nature.

Just like the squirrels, it is important to make sure you have access to everything you need to do your writing in the best possible way.

When it comes to gathering the inspiration and information you need to write, creating your own library of resources should be right at the top of your priority list. When you have all of your favourite books and audios easily accessible in one place, you can dip in to refresh your ideas or trigger new possibilities with your writing at any time.

This month at the IACCW, we have a brand new project that is designed to encourage you to begin building your own library of resources or add something brand new to your existing one.

So it is with great pleasure that I would like to announce the forthcoming publication of The IACCW Experts’ Guide to Writing, Publishing and Building Your Authentic Author Platform.
