A Conscious & Creative Woman is Like a River Flowing…

May 22, 2017

Hi Conscious Writers!

As soon as I read the following quote, I knew it would become one of my favourites:

“A woman in harmony with her spirit is like a river flowing. She goes where she will without pretense and arrives at her destination prepared to be herself and only herself.” Maya Angelou

It resonates deeply with me as my journey of creative self-realization has involved moving into true harmony with my spirit and forging my own authentic path (on-going!).

My process has included developing a conscious connection with the Divine Feminine and exploring the multitude of ways that yin energy can be expressed through who I am and what I do as I follow the path to my “destination”.

Pushing the River

There have been many challenges along the way as I was brought up to value the masculine, yang qualities of taking responsibility for making things happen, driving life forwards to achieve external success and generally pushing the river!

Sound familiar?

5 Ways to Cultivate a Creative Mindset as a Conscious Writer

July 5, 2016

artwork-1443191_640As writers, we all know how important it is to hone the skills of our craft. However sharply we pitch our work to magazine editors, agents or publishers, the words on the page are ultimately where the rubber meets the road.

Yet as Conscious Writers, we also discover the unquantifiable value of cultivating a creative mindset.

This includes both the thoughts and feelings we have about ourselves as writers and the value of our writing.

Both have a significant impact on the success we experience, however we choose to define that. In fact, unless we have our creative mindset fully charged, our words may never reach the page at all!

The bottom line is that our thoughts and feelings need to be in alignment to free up the deepest levels of creative expression. When we think about writing but doubt the worth of our ability or the validity of our contribution, it doesn’t take long for our creative impulse to dry up.

3 Major Benefits of Immersion Time for Conscious Writers

May 31, 2016

hourglass-1289782_640Writing a book is a huge commitment of time and energy, especially when we approach it with the intention of writing deeply with full awareness as Conscious Writing invites us to do.

We can only truly appreciate what is involved when we dedicate ourselves to taking action rather than simply mulling it over as a future possibility.

And if we want to avoid our book taking forever to complete, we need to create a regular rhythm that includes a mix of short to medium bursts of daily writing alongside longer stretches of what I call “immersion time”.

This is when we schedule time out from other commitments to dive deeply into our topic and our writing with as few distractions as possible.

Immersion time can be anything from half a day to one, two, three or more days on retreat. Once we transition fully into creative writing mode, most of us would happily continue with it full time!

My own experience of immersion time when I was writing my latest book combined with my work with people at all stages of the creative process, proves the case that choosing to prioritize our writing is a priceless gift. Here’s why …

5 Tips for Boosting Your Creative Productivity

May 10, 2016

creativity_tileDo you sometimes feel that you’ve got too many ideas and wonder how you’ll ever get them all done? If so, you’re not alone.

Most creative people work on a number of projects simultaneously. And big projects come together from a whole host of smaller tasks.

Writers often have different types of writing (book, blog, fiction, non-fiction) as well as related tasks (research, reflecting, connecting with readers) all in the mix at once.

However creatively inspired you are, at times it can be challenging to keep all of your creative plates spinning and make progress at a pace that works for you and the projects you are working on.

So it’s important to apply your creative energy consciously so that your essential projects, which may be the most creatively challenging, don’t become sidelined because smaller or less demanding tasks are faster to complete.

Fortunately, experience reveals that certain techniques genuinely make a difference to creative productivity. Here are 5 strategies you can apply straight away that will shift your creative output onto new levels:

A Conscious Approach to Developing Your Creative Vision for 2016

January 6, 2016

eye-491625_640Life is a series of endings and beginnings. In fact, each moment is a new beginning; and each day, week, month and year we have the chance to engage consciously with the energy of new possibilities and make a fresh start.

I love the sense of potential the New Year brings and always feel recharged by the process of clearing out the old to make way for the new. Having experienced so many major and minor completions and initiations in my life, I appreciate fully the benefits of crafting an inspiring creative vision to act as an energetic blueprint for the next phase.

So here are my suggestions for how to develop your creative vision for 2016:

1. Review the Recent Past

Cast your mind back over 2015 and write in your journal about what you’ve learned, realized and accomplished – as a writer and in all areas of your life.

You may have discovered a new technique to write more freely, fully realized once and for all the importance of making time to nurture your creative soul, and finally taken action to make progress with a project you feel passionate about, however small or large that progress may be. It all counts! (more…)

IACCW Member Event: Understanding the Spiritual and Psychological Dimension of Creativity and Flow

October 1, 2015

Julia McCutchen interviews Richard Barrett Richard Barrett
on Thursday 8th October

Richard Barrett began his writing career in 1995 and has been writing full time since 2009. He has published a new book each year and plans to continue this rhythm through to 2017. He puts his strong and sustained outburst of creativity down to one single factor—alignment with the motivations of his soul.

In this interview Richard will explain the spiritual/psychological dimensions of creative writing and you’ll learn how to reconnect with your creativity by embracing your soul through understanding:

  • The seven stages of psychological development;
  • The influence of ego soul-dynamics on creativity and flow;
  • What prevents you from accessing your creativity;
  • What you need to do to get into alignment with the creative impulse of your soul;
  • How to get and stay in flow.

Richard Barrett is an author, speaker and internationally recognised thought leader on the evolution of human values in business and society. He is the founder and chairman of the Barrett Values Centre, a Fellow of the World Business Academy, an Advisory Board Member of the Centre for Integral Wisdom, Honorary Board Member of the Spirit of Humanity Forum, and Former Values Coordinator at the World Bank. 3 Ways to Benefit from Going the Extra Mile as a Conscious Writer

August 11, 2015

05. Intothelight351791SmallI am delighted to introduce this edited extract from the Introduction to my new book ‘Conscious Writing: Discover Your True Voice Through Mindfulness and More’ due out on 8 September (Hay House). Enjoy!

Conscious Writing involves a great deal more than simply following the impulse to write and capturing brilliant ideas in a well-crafted collection of words.

Yet writers around the globe have been doing just that for a very long time, and many have achieved impressive success in the eyes of the world.

So let’s remind ourselves why it is worth going the extra mile and opening consciously to deep inner truth as part of our creative writing practice.

A Genuine Expression of My Creative Core

June 2, 2015

sun-581299_350I am delighted to introduce this extract from my new book ‘Conscious Writing: Discover Your True Voice Through Mindfulness and More’ to be published by Hay House on 7 SEPTEMBER. This will give you a flavour of the ‘Personal Reflections’ section at the end of the book. I wrote these pieces to share my own experiences of the contents of each chapter and to include the challenges I’ve faced and their ultimate resolution. Enjoy!

I am like the seed cracked open by the cold, dark winter whose harsh bite cuts through the closed form that contains the full potential and creates the gap through which life pours.

The literal crack on the crown of my head from a falling stage spotlight dismantles my everyday shell in an instant, yet my journey through the ensuing darkness seems to last an eternity.

The initial glimpse of grace becomes lost in the uncertainty as my body, mind and emotions struggle to surface from the void. I am completely undone. All I can do is breathe.

Meet Your Muse: Source of Wisdom and Creativity

September 8, 2014

beachrockslisa200I am delighted to introduce this guest article by award-winning book coach Lisa Tener. Enjoy!

The term “muse” comes from the ancient Greeks and refers to the goddesses who inspire the creation of literature and the arts. You can view the muse as a wise inner teacher: Imagine a part of you that has solutions to your every creative challenge. It has the power to shift negative perceptions that get in the way of your creative flow. And it can help you access inspiration for your writing at any time.

Surrounded by a pile of notes and having tried to structure her first chapter several different ways, Vicky felt confused and overwhelmed. To get unstuck, she asked her muse for clarity. She imagined her muse as “much larger and wiser than me” and trusted it to guide her. Then she fell asleep. When she woke up and sat at her desk to write the chapter, the writing flowed and the organization worked well.

Four Questions for Conscious Writers to Answer & Share

August 11, 2014

InvitationLast week, two invitations arrived on the same day for me to join Blog Tours which are connecting authors with similar interests and expanding the reach for the greater good of all concerned.

I love the principle of creative collaboration and deeply appreciate the resonance of writers sharing their work and supporting each other – so I’m in!

I decided to share my responses here to the four questions asked for the first Blog Tour of authors who write about intuitive understanding to lift the veil on my current writing and to spread the word about the idea.

My invitation for you is to pick up the Blog Tour thread and take it forwards so as many writers as possible can participate and benefit from the experience.

Here’s how it works. Each writer:

  • Is invited by someone to participate, introduces that person at the start of the post and includes a link to their blog. This invitation from me to you is all you need to get started.
  • Answers four questions about their writing as the main body of the post.
  • Invites another writer to continue the process and introduces them at the end of the post along with a link to their blog.
  • Posts what they have written to their blog and shares it with their audience via social media and more.
  • Asks the next writer to post their answers the following week on an agreed day and to continue the process.
Here we go …
