Conscious Writing Core Practice # 2: Spend Time in Nature

September 9, 2017

One of the most significant aspects of my recent silent retreat was spending time in nature and immersing myself in the mystery and magic of the natural world.

It is part of my everyday life; yet having an extended period of time to enjoy all that nature has to offer always feels like such a gift.

I’ve had many awe-inspiring experiences in nature over the years and still discover new levels of awareness, alignment and connection as a result.

Tropical Shock

Many years ago, my first visit to a tropical jungle was initially quite a shock to my system.

We’d travelled for what felt like forever on Venezuelan roads riddled with gaping holes and ended up on an undulating dirt track cut right through the forest.

Finally we came to the point where the track simply ran out – the proverbial end of the road!

As we walked the final stretch to the remote retreat centre, all of my senses were on supreme alert.

The Transformative Value of a Conscious and Creative Reboot

March 8, 2016

fire-1021224_640The last year has been a massive reality check for me with regard to the sheer volume of time, energy and effort that is required to see a book through from manuscript completion to successful publication.

Looking back it feels like the conscious writing process to craft the body of work that became my book was the easy part, although it didn’t always feel like that at the time!

Fortunately, my daily practice of yoga, meditation and more largely enabled me to remain present to what ‘is’ through the roller coaster ride of the publishing process. It was a high priority for me to be connected to inner stillness amidst the array of outer activities, all of which involved absolute deadlines.

Yet as the months passed, the more fatigued I felt, the harder it became to maintain the fullness of my balanced perspective. Finally, the moment came when all the major projects were completed, the launch momentum settled and I was able to stop for more than a brief interlude.

Taking time off to recharge was an extremely welcome immersion in the bliss of stillness, silence, space and the restorative energy of the natural world. I subsequently felt prompted to write a short piece to share my experience and encourage you to remember the importance of what I lovingly call a conscious and creative reboot.

Here it is…

3 Ways to Benefit from the Energy of the Equinox as a Conscious Writer

September 23, 2015

autumn-110668_350It’s the autumn equinox today here in the northern hemisphere, the first day of autumn before the darkness of winter leads into the rebirth of spring. The equinox is a time when there is a natural balance between day and night, light and dark.

Paying attention to what is happening all around us as the trees begin to shed their leaves and the seeds that were planted in spring reach maturity provides us with an opportunity as Conscious Writers. Nature shows us the way as the cycle of life, death and rebirth is an elegant metaphor for the creative process.

So this is a perfect moment to pause and take stock of where we are in relation to harvesting the fruits of our creative endeavours. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on the bigger picture of the meaning of life and its fragility. The cooler weather conditions favour slowing down after the exuberance of summer and taking time for introspection.

What insights can we gain from connecting with the energy of the equinox and observing the wheel of life as it continues to turn?

Nurturing Our Creative Soul as Conscious Writers

March 11, 2015

I am delighted to share this edited extract from my new book, ‘Conscious Writing: How to Write from Your Heart with the Voice of Your Soul’ (Hay House, September 2015). Enjoy 🙂

creative_wellNurturing our creative soul as Conscious Writers involves frequently filling our inner creative well so that it never runs dry and always allows our creativity to flow freely.

Conscious Creativity teaches us to do this by connecting with the whole creative cycle, and honouring each and every phase.

Yet such an approach is rarely accepted as a valid use of our precious time. Instead we are drawn by the demands of contemporary life in the western world to busy ourselves with endless ‘doing’, and direct our energy exclusively outwards to support family and friends, earn our living, and maintain our personal space.

Whilst we all need to honour our commitments respectfully, let’s remember this process begins with honouring our commitments to ourselves.

In the fast lane of doing all that seems essential, we often forget to replenish our inner resources beyond basic recharging which sees us through to the next stint on the treadmill of activity.

As a result, our output frequently far outweighs the input so we end up feeling exhausted, empty, and eventually, resentful and unwell. No wonder creative dreams are so often unfulfilled!

Five Steps to Conscious Writing Freedom

October 6, 2014

ViewFromSteps_normandy-291367_640We all have limiting beliefs to one degree or another relating to our capacity to create, our ability to write or the potential we have as authors – or not as the case may be.

The beliefs we have are not just thoughts in our minds; they usually have powerful emotions attached and are like crystallized energy that becomes locked in the body right down to the cellular level.

Some deeply rooted beliefs require professional help to release, and there are many options available today such as the powerful energy healing technique of Life Alignment.*

However, we can make genuine progress with shifting our belief structure ourselves as long as we approach the task with as much deep self awareness as we are able to bring at the time we decide to take action.

The following Five Step Process is for discovering the beliefs you currently have in relation to creativity and letting go of those which do not serve you.

Allow plenty of time on your own and without interruption so you feel spacious enough for deep exploration and release. Take breaks between the steps if necessary to process your thoughts and feelings – walking in nature is always a good option – and rest when you need to.

This same process can also be applied to other areas of your life, including writing. Simply adapt the questions in Step 1 accordingly.

IACCW Member Event: How Conscious Writers Can Form a Partnership with Nature

July 3, 2014

Julia McCutchen interviews Tina Welling on THURSDAY 10 JULY TinaWelling

Joseph Campbell said, “The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the universe, to match your nature with Nature.” Capital N.

Following his advice, Tina Welling developed a simple three-step process of interacting with the natural world that reminds us how to focus consciously in the moment, and to align the rhythms of our attention and our body with the earth.

She makes the process of developing a fruitful relationship with wildness inside and out accessible to all writers.
In this interview we will explore:
  • How nature triggers our personal stories.
  • Lessons from the natural world on how to manage our creative ideas.
  • The importance of following our longing to write.
  • The value of questions for conscious writers.
  • How a Spirit Walk improves our writing skills
  • The number one piece of advice for creative writers.

Tina Welling is the author of three novels published by NAL Accent/Penguin, including Cowboys Never Cry. Her nonfiction has appeared in The Sun, Body & Soul, and a variety of anthologies. She lives in Jackson Hole, WY. For more information, visit www.tinawelling.com.

The 5 Core Practices of Highly Successful Conscious Writers

February 13, 2013

The image of an iceberg is a wonderful metaphor for the creative writing process.

The 10% we see above the surface of the water represents the actual words of the blogs, books and other communications we write. It arises out of the 90% that is largely hidden from view yet without which the iceberg would not exist at all.

The same principle applies to our writing. A large proportion of the work we do as writers is invisible to our readers but greatly determines the quality of our work and the contribution it makes to the world.

The following 5 practices may not be obvious as part of the mix from the outside looking in when we read the latest book from our favourite author.

Yet, having spoken with thousands of highly successful Conscious Writers, and from both personal and professional experience of Conscious Writing in action, these practices come up time and again as the foundation for authentic success.

I invite you to dip into one or all of these practices to the extent it feels right for you at this time and see from your own personal experience what contribution they make to your writing, your authorship, and your life.

How to Boost Creativity with a “3 D” Experience

May 24, 2010

Bowood_House_2Writing a book for publication is a real commitment of creative energy over many weeks, months and sometimes years. In order to maintain the flow of inspiration and ideas, nurturing your creative soul on a regular basis should be high on your priority list.

Having a clear idea of what activities and situations inspire you and making sure that you include a good mix of these on a day-to-day basis means that your creative well will never run dry.

In addition to the many ideas you already employ for recharging creatively, one approach for conscious and creative writers to explore is the “3 D” experience.

This is when you choose an uplifting activity or set aside some time with the clear intention of being fully and completely present in the moment with whatever it is you are engaged with.

As a result, the quality of your experience shifts onto a whole new level which opens up your connection to Source. With this degree of awareness, your senses are dramatically sharpened and your direct perception of everything around you is with a “beginner’s mind” free from the everyday mental chatter of past and future, judgements and labels.

The circumstances you choose for your “3 D” experience aren’t as important as the degree of consciousness you bring to the situation. Everyday tasks such as washing the dishes can deliver great results when approached with a mindful attitude. However, you will find that certain details support your “3 D” experience more than others so it makes sense to start with what you enjoy the most.

Here are a few ideas for you to explore your own “3 D” experience:
