Authenticity for Authors

October 12, 2018

A couple of weeks ago I attended a book launch organised by a friend and colleague whose book has just been published.

However it wasn’t billed as a launch at all.

Instead I was invited to a Book Blessing, and everything about the celebration sang a song of authentic choices for how this book would be birthed into the world.

I loved it!

Authenticity at Every Level

The teaching that fills the pages of the book and the voice that shines through are perfumed with a level of authenticity that comes from having the courage to stand firmly in your truth come what may.

The same degree of individual preference is apparent from the professional independent publishing option selected and the approach to marketing that’s already successfully spreading the word far and wide.

Clearly the received wisdom of what “should” be done at each stage of the writing and publishing process has been dissolved into what feels truly authentic at every single level for this particular author.

IACCW Member Event: Do You Need a Literary Agent?

January 26, 2017

Julia McCutchen interviews Susan Mears
on 2nd FebruarySusanMears_cropped_250

Over the last few years, the world of publishing has changed dramatically. A whole range of publishing solutions are now available for writers who feel inspired to share their ideas, insights and stories with the world at large.

Empowering though this may be for aspiring authors and those who are already working on their second or third books; it’s also a double-edge sword as it raises important questions about what the best route to market actually is. It also requires informed decisions to be made about which professionals to work with.

In this interview, experienced literary agent Susan Mears will bring you up-to-date with the latest developments in publishing and explain:

  • How to decide on self-publishing or traditional publishing for your book(s)
  • What level of marketing is right for you whichever publishing option you choose
  • If you need a literary agent and what the benefits are from working with one
  • How to find and approach an agent professionally and with confidence
  • How the market is evolving and what to focus on to succeed as an author today

Susan Mears trained in publishing at Random House and worked as a Senior Editor in three other publishers before founding the Susan Mears Literary Agency in 1993. Since then she has worked internationally representing her authors to the major publishing houses and also to her extensive contacts in the fields of film and television. Her main base is in London but she also maintains a presence in Dubai and New York. Her agency has a tremendous reputation for discovering new talent and has taken a number of authors from start up author to international bestseller status. What’s new this month?

November 7, 2015

Julia McCutchenHi Conscious & Creative Writers!

Two months on from the publication of my new book Conscious Writing, I’m surfacing from what has been an extremely intense experience!

So much so, that I’ve been prompted to write an article about it called A Conscious Approach to the Alchemy of Authorship see here.

The reality of what it takes to write and publish a book successfully includes a massive investment of time and energy over a long period of time (about 2 1/2 years for me), not to mention the financial implications.

Following an Inner Impulse

Yet the commitment to follow the inner impulse to write what we’re here to write leads to the creation of a body of work that is in service to the core message and stories we feel called to share.

As a result, my highest priority now is to share this core teaching which has been described as ‘a pioneering movement’ for everyone who wants to make a positive difference in the world through discovering and expressing their true voice.

So, here’s a summary of the ways I’ve created so far to do just that and even more importantly, to support you to follow your inner impulse and create what you’re here to create:

    • FREE Resources: videos, audios, articles and more – click here
    • The Book, Journal and Audio CD: enjoy a 10% discount off the list price of the book and a ‘thank you’ gift when you purchase plus a request to post a review if you like what you read – click here
    • LIVE Events:  your chance to experience the Conscious Writing process with my personal guidance on a one day workshop click here, and on Retreat between 10th and 13th June 2016 click here
    • Social Media: my new author page on Facebook where I’m posting tips, quotes, aspects of my personal journey, videos and more  – click here
    • Individual Mentoring: perhaps one of the most powerful and transformative ways of all to discover your true self and express your true voice, on the page and in the world – click here

On the day the book was published, the overwhelming feeling I had was one of deep gratitude (tinged with relief and a sense of awe!) for everything and everyone who had contributed to me arriving at that point.

Now, the next level of my authorship is unfolding and my commitment to you is to continue sharing all that I learn along the way to enable you to follow your own creative calling. Don’t wait until you feel ready; that moment will never arrive. Simply ask yourself, if not now, when?

To your conscious & creative success!

3 Ways to Plan for Success as a Published Author

April 8, 2015

Female rock climber reaching the summit.Completing the final draft of a manuscript is a major threshold for any writer to cross, and is certainly worth celebrating as a significant achievement in its own right.

Once we have surfaced from whatever degree of conscious and creative recharge we require, a whole new level of our progress towards successful published authorship begins.

Naturally, we need to plan ahead to ensure that we stay on track with our intentions to reach our readers with our message and stories.

Yet as Conscious Writers, we are mindful of remaining present in the moment with all aspects of ourselves in alignment despite the future focus. This is how we retain congruence between our head and our heart to guide us as we make important decisions along the way.

Whether we are working with a traditional publisher or choosing the indie self-publishing route, planning for success as a published author means that in addition to our writing, our attention is required for many other activities.

So what are the main areas we need to focus on to give our book the best possible chance of success in the world?

Guest Article by IACCW Expert Eric Maisel – Writing Life Purpose Fiction

April 7, 2014

I am delighted to introduce this guest article from IACCW Expert and America’s foremost creativity coach Eric Maisel. Enjoy!

Fiction writers find themselves under a certain pressure to “develop their characters.” Is this actually a fair pressure? Do all protagonists in fiction need to be “developed”?

If “character development” means that a character is obliged to grow or change during the course of a novel, then authors should perhaps feel under no particular obligation to always “develop their characters.” Sometimes characters need not to change!

I’ve been thinking about this a lot as I’ve been writing fiction in the category of what I’m calling “life purpose fiction.” Can’t a good novel be built around the following sort of central premise?

Say that your main character makes a strong decision about his life purposes and then goes about living those life purposes, only to come up against certain threats and obstacles. Can’t the energy of the novel come from his defiant efforts to persevere?
