Intuition – A Trusted Ally for Conscious Writers

July 15, 2017

Before the technical revolution began the process of redrafting the landscape, I learned the business of publishing from the ground up.

Inspired by the mission of communicating perennial wisdom to a contemporary international audience, I quickly realized that commissioning books for publication was more of an art than a science.

This was especially the case in the world of independent publishing, where breaking new ground and working at the cutting edge were the norm.

Working Intuitively

I hadn’t planned to develop my intuition as part of my work. Yet it wasn’t long before I experienced the limitations of decisions made on facts and figures alone.

Introducing timeless knowledge to a rapidly developing marketplace required greater insight than the study of past success provided.

Add to that the publishing reality of working one or two years ahead of the moment readers would discover the end results in printed form, and it became clear that a sixth sense” would be extremely valuable.

The Difference that Makes the Difference

Looking back, I now see that making a conscious choice to develop my intuition at an early stage of my publishing career was the difference that made the difference – not just to my work, but to all areas of my life.

5 Tips for Boosting Your Creative Productivity

May 10, 2016

creativity_tileDo you sometimes feel that you’ve got too many ideas and wonder how you’ll ever get them all done? If so, you’re not alone.

Most creative people work on a number of projects simultaneously. And big projects come together from a whole host of smaller tasks.

Writers often have different types of writing (book, blog, fiction, non-fiction) as well as related tasks (research, reflecting, connecting with readers) all in the mix at once.

However creatively inspired you are, at times it can be challenging to keep all of your creative plates spinning and make progress at a pace that works for you and the projects you are working on.

So it’s important to apply your creative energy consciously so that your essential projects, which may be the most creatively challenging, don’t become sidelined because smaller or less demanding tasks are faster to complete.

Fortunately, experience reveals that certain techniques genuinely make a difference to creative productivity. Here are 5 strategies you can apply straight away that will shift your creative output onto new levels:

Intuition – An Important Ally for Conscious Writers

April 5, 2016

prairie-679014_640Intuition can be your most powerful ally when it comes to writing your book and taking your message out to the marketplace successfully and with soul. Do you know how to access yours?

Swiss psychologist Carl Jung proposed that intuition is one of four ways human beings process the world alongside sensation, thinking and feeling. His pioneering work has contributed hugely to our understanding today.

An important gateway to conscious creativity, intuition functions beyond the mind and opens the way for intuitive writing. The hallmark of intuition is immediate and direct knowledge without the conscious use of reasoning. Rising above thought but using the mind as a vehicle, intuition is a distinct sense of Knowing.

A Strong Hunch

You will have experienced intuition already even though you may not have been consciously aware that it was guiding you.

Think of a time when you had a strong hunch, a gut feeling that you couldn’t quite explain but which just felt “right”.

You may have had an “aha” moment when you suddenly understood something which made complete sense. Or you could have experienced a gradual process which led you towards a conclusion and resulted in the complete knowledge that you were on the right track.

3 Ways to Benefit from Going the Extra Mile as a Conscious Writer

05. Intothelight351791SmallI am delighted to introduce this edited extract from the Introduction to my new book ‘Conscious Writing: Discover Your True Voice Through Mindfulness and More’ due out on 8 September (Hay House). Enjoy!

Conscious Writing involves a great deal more than simply following the impulse to write and capturing brilliant ideas in a well-crafted collection of words.

Yet writers around the globe have been doing just that for a very long time, and many have achieved impressive success in the eyes of the world.

So let’s remind ourselves why it is worth going the extra mile and opening consciously to deep inner truth as part of our creative writing practice.

3 Ways to Plan for Success as a Published Author

April 8, 2015

Female rock climber reaching the summit.Completing the final draft of a manuscript is a major threshold for any writer to cross, and is certainly worth celebrating as a significant achievement in its own right.

Once we have surfaced from whatever degree of conscious and creative recharge we require, a whole new level of our progress towards successful published authorship begins.

Naturally, we need to plan ahead to ensure that we stay on track with our intentions to reach our readers with our message and stories.

Yet as Conscious Writers, we are mindful of remaining present in the moment with all aspects of ourselves in alignment despite the future focus. This is how we retain congruence between our head and our heart to guide us as we make important decisions along the way.

Whether we are working with a traditional publisher or choosing the indie self-publishing route, planning for success as a published author means that in addition to our writing, our attention is required for many other activities.

So what are the main areas we need to focus on to give our book the best possible chance of success in the world?

Nurturing Our Creative Soul as Conscious Writers

March 11, 2015

I am delighted to share this edited extract from my new book, ‘Conscious Writing: How to Write from Your Heart with the Voice of Your Soul’ (Hay House, September 2015). Enjoy 🙂

creative_wellNurturing our creative soul as Conscious Writers involves frequently filling our inner creative well so that it never runs dry and always allows our creativity to flow freely.

Conscious Creativity teaches us to do this by connecting with the whole creative cycle, and honouring each and every phase.

Yet such an approach is rarely accepted as a valid use of our precious time. Instead we are drawn by the demands of contemporary life in the western world to busy ourselves with endless ‘doing’, and direct our energy exclusively outwards to support family and friends, earn our living, and maintain our personal space.

Whilst we all need to honour our commitments respectfully, let’s remember this process begins with honouring our commitments to ourselves.

In the fast lane of doing all that seems essential, we often forget to replenish our inner resources beyond basic recharging which sees us through to the next stint on the treadmill of activity.

As a result, our output frequently far outweighs the input so we end up feeling exhausted, empty, and eventually, resentful and unwell. No wonder creative dreams are so often unfulfilled!

A Conscious Approach to the 5 Stages of Writing

December 8, 2014

five-elementsOpinions vary regarding the number of stages involved in the process of writing and range from three to a dozen depending on the way the contents of each stage are distributed.

In Conscious Writing we place a great deal of emphasis on the importance of inner preparation before any outer action is taken so it is no surprise to discover that this is the first of five stages we go through as Conscious Writers:

  1. Preparation
  2. Inspiration
  3. First draft
  4. Refine and revise
  5. Edit and complete

These stages do not necessarily follow a neat linear progression. The initial preparation leads to inspiration and first draft writing although during the early phases of inspiration we may dip regularly back into preparation before a single word meets the page.

The first draft will always require refinement and revision yet this may end up being more of a dance to and fro than a clear cut boundary between one and the other. A great deal depends on the nature of the content, the relationship we have with it, and discovering our optimum way of working.

For our purposes here, exploring each stage in the typical order enables us to appreciate the subtlety and detail of the creative framework as well as the potential contribution a conscious approach can make.

Four Questions for Conscious Writers to Answer & Share

August 11, 2014

InvitationLast week, two invitations arrived on the same day for me to join Blog Tours which are connecting authors with similar interests and expanding the reach for the greater good of all concerned.

I love the principle of creative collaboration and deeply appreciate the resonance of writers sharing their work and supporting each other – so I’m in!

I decided to share my responses here to the four questions asked for the first Blog Tour of authors who write about intuitive understanding to lift the veil on my current writing and to spread the word about the idea.

My invitation for you is to pick up the Blog Tour thread and take it forwards so as many writers as possible can participate and benefit from the experience.

Here’s how it works. Each writer:

  • Is invited by someone to participate, introduces that person at the start of the post and includes a link to their blog. This invitation from me to you is all you need to get started.
  • Answers four questions about their writing as the main body of the post.
  • Invites another writer to continue the process and introduces them at the end of the post along with a link to their blog.
  • Posts what they have written to their blog and shares it with their audience via social media and more.
  • Asks the next writer to post their answers the following week on an agreed day and to continue the process.
Here we go …

Guest Article by IACCW Expert Eric Maisel – Writing Life Purpose Fiction

April 7, 2014

I am delighted to introduce this guest article from IACCW Expert and America’s foremost creativity coach Eric Maisel. Enjoy!

Fiction writers find themselves under a certain pressure to “develop their characters.” Is this actually a fair pressure? Do all protagonists in fiction need to be “developed”?

If “character development” means that a character is obliged to grow or change during the course of a novel, then authors should perhaps feel under no particular obligation to always “develop their characters.” Sometimes characters need not to change!

I’ve been thinking about this a lot as I’ve been writing fiction in the category of what I’m calling “life purpose fiction.” Can’t a good novel be built around the following sort of central premise?

Say that your main character makes a strong decision about his life purposes and then goes about living those life purposes, only to come up against certain threats and obstacles. Can’t the energy of the novel come from his defiant efforts to persevere?
