5 Core Practices for Conscious Writers: # 1 Cultivate Awareness

May 10, 2017

My approach to writing is based on a combination of soul and craft.

Honing the skills of your craft is essential for any creative art; for most conscious creatives it becomes a life-long journey of learning and refining that is challenging and rewarding in equal measure!

When it comes to the craft of writing, there are plenty of books, courses and classes that teach you everything from the basics to advanced techniques for shaping your words to suit any purpose.

The “Conscious” in Conscious Writing

My true calling is to create, write and live consciously in alignment with my soul and to guide others to do the same – that is the “conscious” in Conscious Writing.

Working from the inside out with the emphasis on creating the right conditions for soul and craft to meet on the page requires a mindful approach.

That’s why I use the image of an iceberg to represent all of the unseen preparation that encourages creative mindfulness and leads to vibrant writing (read more about that here).

5 Core Practices

It’s also why I developed the 5 Core Practices which open the way to bring all aspects of yourself into alignment – body, emotions, mind and soul – to draw you fully into the present moment before you write.

Intuition – An Important Ally for Conscious Writers

April 5, 2016

prairie-679014_640Intuition can be your most powerful ally when it comes to writing your book and taking your message out to the marketplace successfully and with soul. Do you know how to access yours?

Swiss psychologist Carl Jung proposed that intuition is one of four ways human beings process the world alongside sensation, thinking and feeling. His pioneering work has contributed hugely to our understanding today.

An important gateway to conscious creativity, intuition functions beyond the mind and opens the way for intuitive writing. The hallmark of intuition is immediate and direct knowledge without the conscious use of reasoning. Rising above thought but using the mind as a vehicle, intuition is a distinct sense of Knowing.

A Strong Hunch

You will have experienced intuition already even though you may not have been consciously aware that it was guiding you.

Think of a time when you had a strong hunch, a gut feeling that you couldn’t quite explain but which just felt “right”.

You may have had an “aha” moment when you suddenly understood something which made complete sense. Or you could have experienced a gradual process which led you towards a conclusion and resulted in the complete knowledge that you were on the right track.

IACCW Member Event: Understanding the Spiritual and Psychological Dimension of Creativity and Flow

October 1, 2015

Julia McCutchen interviews Richard Barrett Richard Barrett
on Thursday 8th October

Richard Barrett began his writing career in 1995 and has been writing full time since 2009. He has published a new book each year and plans to continue this rhythm through to 2017. He puts his strong and sustained outburst of creativity down to one single factor—alignment with the motivations of his soul.

In this interview Richard will explain the spiritual/psychological dimensions of creative writing and you’ll learn how to reconnect with your creativity by embracing your soul through understanding:

  • The seven stages of psychological development;
  • The influence of ego soul-dynamics on creativity and flow;
  • What prevents you from accessing your creativity;
  • What you need to do to get into alignment with the creative impulse of your soul;
  • How to get and stay in flow.

Richard Barrett is an author, speaker and internationally recognised thought leader on the evolution of human values in business and society. He is the founder and chairman of the Barrett Values Centre, a Fellow of the World Business Academy, an Advisory Board Member of the Centre for Integral Wisdom, Honorary Board Member of the Spirit of Humanity Forum, and Former Values Coordinator at the World Bank. May Inspiration for Conscious & Creative Writers

May 19, 2015

creative_soul+craft300Prepare to Be Creative

‘In order to be creative you have to prepare to be creative. No one can give you your subject matter, your creative content; if they could, it would be their creation and not yours. But there’s a process that generates creativity – and you can learn it. And you can make it habitual.

There’s a paradox in the notion that creativity should be a habit. We think of creativity as a way of keeping everything fresh and new, while habit implies routine and repetition. That paradox intrigues me because it occupies the place where creativity and skill rub up against each other.

It takes skill to bring something you’ve imagined into the world: to use words to create believable lives, to select the colors and textures of paint to represent a haystack at sunset, to combine ingredients to make a flavorful dish. No one is born with that skill. It is developed through exercise, through repetition, through a blend of learning and reflection that’s both painstaking and rewarding. And it takes time… If art is the bridge between what you see in your mind and what the world sees, then skill is how you build that bridge.’

What is Conscious Writing?

November 4, 2013

Discovering our authentic voice, writing with lasting impact, and standing out from the crowd are high priorities for most of us who write. But how do we go about achieving these intentions? Conscious Writing is a new approach to deep writing with full awareness which takes us into the core of what we’re really here to write, and in the process, opens the way for us to realise our true potential as authors in the world.

As her 40th birthday approached, Jane decided that the book she had thought about writing for so long could not be put off any longer. It felt like “now or never” and she was determined to see it through to completion. As a professional person who had an interest in personal development, Jane knew all about setting goals and positive thinking. She created a plan and scheduled time in her diary to begin writing.

Three months later, with only a few pages of notes written and nothing concrete achieved, she approached me for help. She was dismayed by the fact that despite her best efforts and a strong intellectual determination to write her book, it just wasn’t happening. The situation was especially frustrating for her as she was a disciplined person who usually found it easy to stick to her plans. Yet, she discovered that sheer willpower didn’t work with writing; the harder she pushed, the less progress she made!

How to Write with the Voice of Your Soul

VoiceOfTheThere are 7 Core Principles underlying the success of every conscious and creative writer. These principles are all about accessing the right state of consciousness and applying the right mindset to your writing, and to all activities relating to your authorship, for the best results at every level.

The sixth core principle is authenticity. The standard definition of authenticity includes the words real, credible, genuine, original and true which are also positive descriptions of powerful writing.

Yet the true potential is revealed by understanding that authenticity is present when the inner you (the real you) is connected to the outer you (the interface you have with the world) empowering all that you think, say, do … and write!

At its core, authenticity is the voice of your soul.

When you access this deep space of truth, you discover the essence of what you are really here to write and share with the world. This is where your expertise, insights and stories take on a whole new level of meaning and purpose – for you and for your readers.

We all have a unique contribution to make. As writers, we use words to reveal and then to communicate what we already know at some level within ourselves.

Ultimately, the forms we choose for our writing – fiction, non-fiction, poetry, screenplays – are less important than the essence of what those forms convey.

This is especially the case when we feel drawn to making a difference to our readers with our writing. This could be to inspire people to open up to new possibilities, to inform them about what we have learnt and know to be true, or to entertain and lift their spirits through storytelling.

It is through making a commitment to authenticity as a writer that you connect with the heart of what your writing is truly all about. When you access the voice of your soul in this way, your own sense of creative fulfillment is complete and the right words find their way to the page to enable you to share your gifts with your readers.

So here are three ways to dive deeply into authenticity so that you can write with the voice of your soul:
