Create Space for Conscious Creativity

August 3, 2016

zen-970477_640From the earliest times, sages and mystics have shared an abundance of secrets for waking up to our true nature and becoming fully conscious.

Even the simple yet timeless technique of paying attention to the flow of the breath in and out of our body is a powerful way to still the chatter of our everyday mind and open the way for deeper levels of awareness to arise.

As we increasingly open to there being more to life than meets the eye, we discover a naturally occurring creative impulse that seeks expression in the world.

Making space for a conscious approach to expressing this creative impulse leads us to discover our true calling and make the contribution we’re here to make. Ultimately we reap the full rewards of conscious and creative living as our lives become an authentic reflection of our soul.

What is conscious creativity?

Conscious creativity is a combination of self-realization (conscious) and self-expression (creativity). It’s a holistic way to align ourselves with the creative flow of life and validate the inclination we all have for authentic self-discovery and expression.

The Transformative Value of a Conscious and Creative Reboot

March 8, 2016

fire-1021224_640The last year has been a massive reality check for me with regard to the sheer volume of time, energy and effort that is required to see a book through from manuscript completion to successful publication.

Looking back it feels like the conscious writing process to craft the body of work that became my book was the easy part, although it didn’t always feel like that at the time!

Fortunately, my daily practice of yoga, meditation and more largely enabled me to remain present to what ‘is’ through the roller coaster ride of the publishing process. It was a high priority for me to be connected to inner stillness amidst the array of outer activities, all of which involved absolute deadlines.

Yet as the months passed, the more fatigued I felt, the harder it became to maintain the fullness of my balanced perspective. Finally, the moment came when all the major projects were completed, the launch momentum settled and I was able to stop for more than a brief interlude.

Taking time off to recharge was an extremely welcome immersion in the bliss of stillness, silence, space and the restorative energy of the natural world. I subsequently felt prompted to write a short piece to share my experience and encourage you to remember the importance of what I lovingly call a conscious and creative reboot.

Here it is…

7 Timeless Tips for Conscious Writing Success

January 13, 2014

A couple of years ago I wrote an article on how to create a New Year strategy for success and inject a fresh burst of energy into your plans for writing and publishing your book.

When I reviewed it in preparation to share something of real value with you to herald the start of 2014, it struck me how the tips are not just related to success at the start of the year.

The timeless nature of the seven suggestions inspired me to share them with you one more time alongside one additional recommendation. That is to take advantage of the fresh wave of energy and enhanced sense of creative possibility which is a factor of the New Year.

So if you’re ready to follow through on your impulse to write what you are here to write in 2014, bring these tips to life by taking action within the next seven days. Then keep the momentum going by connecting with other Conscious Writers who are doing the same. Enjoy!

Lessons (Re)Learned from Writing My Second Book (Part 2)

October 7, 2013

Three months ago I wrote an article called 7 Lessons (Re)Learned From Writing My Second Book (Part 1)*. At the time I thought that the next installment would come at the end of my writing process.

However, I am inspired to offer some additional insights now, even though I am still in the midst of this book emerging into form on the page.

Having consciously chosen to give it the time and space it needs alongside honouring all of my other commitments, this is evidence of the first lesson of the original article: allow more time than you think to write your book – then double it!

With that said, here are three more reminders about actions that truly make a difference to book writing success:

7 Lessons (Re)Learned from Writing My Second Book – Part 1

June 10, 2013

I’ve recently started writing my second book. Yet in many ways it feels so different to my experience of the previous one that it seems as if I am writing a book for the first time. In fact I am intentionally approaching this book with a beginner’s mind, and it is working. Slowly but surely, progress is being made that I feel positive about.

At one level, I know the core of the content, message and purpose of the new book well. It has been developed over the last few years from my own experience, and was initially applied to my work coaching and mentoring writers individually. Then I created a coherent flow and began leading workshop experiences which I am continuing to offer today.

When the decision arose to write a book on the topic, I started with the workshop content and mapped out a structure of chapters based on that. It was a helpful way to start but I soon realized that what I needed to do was put that completely to one side, and start writing the book from scratch – a process I am still underway with.

While its all fresh in my mind, I thought it might be helpful to share some of the lessons I’ve (re)learned from applying what I teach others on a daily basis to my own book writing experience.

The Alpha and Omega of Creative Expression

April 2, 2012

CreativeCycle_EmptyCirclesIn a recent mentoring session with a relatively inexperienced writer, I was reminded of the importance of refreshing our memory about core principles on a regular basis. This ensures we remain on track at every level as conscious & creative writers.

On this occasion, the prompt was to do with giving full permission to pause briefly following an extremely successful burst of creative productivity. This pause provided a much needed mid project recharge before diving in to the next phase of activity.

The core principle being applied here relates to the fact that the creative impulse arises from – and returns to – space. This alpha and omega of creative expression includes space in our schedule, space in our environment, and most importantly, space in our mind.

Even if we aren’t consciously aware of it, at a deep level the original creative impulse has its source in the space of infinite potential out of which everything flows.

The A-Z of IACCW Membership by Charter Member Margaret Abraham

February 28, 2012

Alphabet_AtoZI joined the IACCW as a Charter Member because of the words conscious and creative, they just hit the right cord. The world of writers, authors, and publishers felt totally alien to me. Having an urge to start writing was one thing, but where to start was another.

I know the world of difference a good coach can make when starting out on a new adventure so I took a deep breath and signed up.  I have not been disappointed.  The A-Z of IACCW is my experience of the journey so far:

A is for Authenticity – Alignment with your soul.   Awareness of what you are capable of, and who you are becoming.

B is for Breathe to slow you down, relax, tune in.

C is for Commitment to write each day.  Connecting with our Creator.

D is for Developing & deepening your writing practice. Discovering your authentic voice.

E is for Evolving – connection, creativity, inspiration.

F is for Feedback and encouragement from Julia and IACCW facebook friends.

How Journal Writing Enriches Your Writing Life

January 23, 2012

07. Morning2300972XSmallTravelling alone to the other side of the world to visit a new country and experience a different culture is an ideal opportunity to dive deeply into journal writing.

This is especially the case if the primary focus of the trip is to go on a retreat which encourages inner reflection as a process of creative exchange with the outer environment.

Having recently returned from such an adventure with a journal packed to overflowing with fresh observations, realisations and ideas, I’m inspired to share this reminder of the immense value of journal writing.

Of course, you don’t need to go anywhere to experience the benefits of writing in a journal. You simply need to commit to a regular practice that is, in this case, for your eyes only.

Many people see blogging as a way of writing a journal online to share with others. It can indeed work well for that purpose and some writers have enjoyed real success with that approach.

Yet private journal writing is a different practice. It delivers rich rewards, some of which may well find their way out to the world, but usually these will show up in a new form or be the invisible inspiration behind a creative project.
