Intuition – An Important Ally for Conscious Writers

April 5, 2016

prairie-679014_640Intuition can be your most powerful ally when it comes to writing your book and taking your message out to the marketplace successfully and with soul. Do you know how to access yours?

Swiss psychologist Carl Jung proposed that intuition is one of four ways human beings process the world alongside sensation, thinking and feeling. His pioneering work has contributed hugely to our understanding today.

An important gateway to conscious creativity, intuition functions beyond the mind and opens the way for intuitive writing. The hallmark of intuition is immediate and direct knowledge without the conscious use of reasoning. Rising above thought but using the mind as a vehicle, intuition is a distinct sense of Knowing.

A Strong Hunch

You will have experienced intuition already even though you may not have been consciously aware that it was guiding you.

Think of a time when you had a strong hunch, a gut feeling that you couldn’t quite explain but which just felt “right”.

You may have had an “aha” moment when you suddenly understood something which made complete sense. Or you could have experienced a gradual process which led you towards a conclusion and resulted in the complete knowledge that you were on the right track.

A Conscious Approach to Developing Your Creative Vision for 2016

January 6, 2016

eye-491625_640Life is a series of endings and beginnings. In fact, each moment is a new beginning; and each day, week, month and year we have the chance to engage consciously with the energy of new possibilities and make a fresh start.

I love the sense of potential the New Year brings and always feel recharged by the process of clearing out the old to make way for the new. Having experienced so many major and minor completions and initiations in my life, I appreciate fully the benefits of crafting an inspiring creative vision to act as an energetic blueprint for the next phase.

So here are my suggestions for how to develop your creative vision for 2016:

1. Review the Recent Past

Cast your mind back over 2015 and write in your journal about what you’ve learned, realized and accomplished – as a writer and in all areas of your life.

You may have discovered a new technique to write more freely, fully realized once and for all the importance of making time to nurture your creative soul, and finally taken action to make progress with a project you feel passionate about, however small or large that progress may be. It all counts! (more…)

5 Ways to Live the Questions of Creative Enquiry

July 6, 2015

question-479660_350I am delighted to introduce this extract from my new book ‘Conscious Writing: Discover Your True Voice through Mindfulness and More’ published by Hay House on 7 September. Enjoy!

Connecting to our creative core is an essential component of Conscious Writing and requires us to cross the invisible threshold that separates the comfort of what we know from the uncertainty of all we don’t.

When we have the courage to let go of certainties and face the mystery fearlessly we are led directly into the unchartered waters of infinite creative potential.

Yet embracing ‘not knowing’ at the level of the everyday mind provides many of us with a real challenge. We have largely been taught that ‘knowing’ and knowledge are highly prized whereas ‘not knowing’ and ignorance are to be avoided by applying ourselves diligently to learning.

So how do we release the feeling that we should know in order for a deeper level of Knowing to arise? How do we engage consciously with the mystery and become a co-creator with it?

October Inspiration for Conscious & Creative Writers

October 21, 2014

rain_on_leafOpening to the creative flow of the universe.

“I still remember the day in my childhood when I was made to struggle across my lessons in a first primer… Suddenly, I came to a rhymed sentence of combined words, which may be translated thus –
‘It rains, the leaves tremble.’

At once, I came to a world wherein I recovered my full meaning. My mind touched the creative realm of expression, and at that moment I was no longer a mere student with his mind muffled by spelling lessons, enclosed by a classroom.

The rhythmic picture of tremulous leaves beaten by the rain opened before my mind the world which does not merely carry information, but a harmony with my being. The unmeaning fragments lost their individual isolation and my mind revelled in the unity of a vision.

In a similar manner, on that morning in the village, the facts of my life suddenly appeared to me in a luminous unity of truth… I felt sure that some Being who comprehended me and my world was seeking his best expression in all my experiences, uniting them into an ever-widening individuality which is a spiritual work of art.”

Rabindranath Tagore, The Religion of Man

As Conscious Writers, we align all aspects of ourselves – body, emotions, mind and soul – to clear the way for the natural creative flow of life itself to pour through us, onto the page and into the world.

Whole Mind Writing

April 30, 2012

headandbulbandbook_TomEvansI am delighted to introduce this guest article from writer’s unblocker and author Tom Evans. Enjoy!

When you are writing in the zone, an amazing transformation in your physiology and neurology is taking place. Something much more subtle too is occurring across time and space.

If you could get the head of a writer in an MRI scanner when they are in flow, you would see both halves of the brain lit up at the same time.

For 95% or so of writers, as some are wired differently, this is what is going on. The right brain is holding the vision, shape and scope of what they are writing. It will be forming sentences and ’looking’ backwards and forwards over the book to check that what is currently being written fits in with the whole.

At exactly the same time, the left brain will be focusing on the act of writing itself and that the actual words used follow grammatical rules and are spelt correctly. Note this is a bit of a generalisation as there is much cross communication going between the hemispheres.

For the writer who is ’out of sorts’, something else might be in play. The left brain and outer cortex might be running thoughts that they might not have enough time to write or harbouring fears of self doubt about their talent. The right brain might be dreaming about a six figure advance and retiring in the Caribbean after selling a million books before the book is even written.

How Authors Can Benefit From Visiting Book Fairs

April 16, 2012

LondonBookFairHere in the UK, the London Book Fair begins today and continues for the next three days (16th to 18th April).

It is described as a “global marketplace for rights negotiation and the sale and distribution of content across print, audio, TV, film and digital channels. With over 400 seminars and events, 1,500 international exhibiting companies and 24,500 publishing professionals, The London Book Fair encompasses the broad spectrum of the publishing industry.”

It is one of the main book fairs which take place each year for professionals in the book trade alongside Book Expo America, the Frankfurt Book Fair and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. There are also many smaller yet worthwhile book fairs and exhibitions internationally.

Many authors wonder if it is worth attending these trade fairs and many commentators say that it isn’t. My view is that it can be a valuable experience if you approach it with the right mindset. You also need to plan your visit well in advance and wear sensible shoes in the knowledge that you’ll be on your feet for most of the day!

It is important to be realistic when thinking through a book fair visit, especially if you have a vision of meeting agents and editors to present your book to them. Most publishing professionals will have filled their schedule of 30 minute meetings well in advance of the fair taking place.

Having said that, serendipity can, and does, occur at book fairs.
